    Website domain name legal question

I'm working on a personal project that I want to share with people (people from here, as well). I'm going to try to work on a mysql database and have it on a website so that people can view stats from it (so far I'm just learning).

It's all cheap enough on godaddy that I can buy a 1 year domain and hosting just to see if I can get it going.

My question is this - I do not plan on making any money from it... It's just a side project for fun.

It's UFC related, and I want to use UFC in the URL name... Can I do this, since it's a registered company, or do I have to steer clear of using UFC within the main portion of the domain name?

You can't use anybody stuff on a public website. All UFC pictures are UFC property. You would get sued out the ***. Just having UFC in the url name is a copy rights violation.

Copy rights violation isn't something to take likely. Years ago in college a classmate of mines used ONE Disney picture on his webpage and Disney sued the hell out of him and was fined $200,000 and was banned from using ANY PC or cellphone with a web browser for 6 years.

I have no plans to use any UFC pictures or anything on my site - so I'm not worried about that. Just the UFC name - and the information will be UFC related.

From what I can tell - it seems to be ok so long as I'm not trying to trick anyone into thinking they're on another site. There are tons of websites out there using trademark names, so I'm kind of wondering if there are certain rules to what you can and can't use.

for instance - sites like this: http://ufc-fights.com/ seem fine, although they haven't updated in a while... or this - http://www.advancednflstats.com/ , using the NFL name

or another example - maddenmania.net leads to this very site we are on (OS) - www.maddenmania.net

You got to have written permission from them. It won't be an email it would an official letter from them giving you permission to use such and such of theirs.

Dana White is strict when to comes to the UFC brand. Did you not see when he went after youtube for allowing users to upload ufc fights on there. Didn't matter if the fights were 7 years old, he still went nuts over that.

So it is best to get written permission from them.

I'll steer clear of the name then, thanks. I'll probably just use Ultimate instead of UFC since it relates to their name, but is just a free to use word.

It won't be anything popular, but probably worth avoiding incase it turns into something.
