      Re: WINE sleppers....

We always have a pretty good selection of wine in our house. I prefer red as most whites are too sweet or two dry for my taste, but my wife likes her reislings and pinot grigio's, so usually I get stuck drinking that as opposed to having to drink a full bottle of red by myself as she has yet to really find a red that she likes.

I prefer cab's, but have no problem with merlot, malbec's, pinot noir's or syrahs.

I am in no way an expert when it comes to wines and what goes with what, as I typically drink red wine with everything. I've drank some $100-$200 bottles of wine on business dinners, but when it comes down to it I just don't think they taste $100+ better than what I usually drink at home.

Costco, IMO, is the absolute best place to get great wine at a great price. Their selection is usually great if you are looking for mid-low to mid-high priced wines ($12 - $50) and the info they carry on their signage is very helpful if you are bringing wine for dinner, etc. We probably stock up on 10-12 bottles of wine every month or two.

For me, the great thing about red wine is that it isn't served ice cold, so I never feel the rush to drink it fast like I do with beer to mixed drinks. I can sip on a glass of nice red wine for 30 or 45 minutes over dinner and really enjoy it. With beer, by then it's warm and not nearly as good and mixed drinks become watered down. Great with dinner, but also great after the kids to to sleep on a Friday or Saturday night.

What to you separates the more expensive wines from say a $10-$15 one?

Not a whole lot...Most of the time.

I think you see a larger jump in quality when you jump from the "Two Buck Chuck" to the moderately priced wines then you do from jumping from those to the ultra expensive stuff.

Again, I am in no way a win conneseur, but first off, you almost never get the sour/vineger first taste you get with some really cheap bottles of red wine. There is that fine line in wine between being properly bitter and outright sour and nasty. I just think when you get into the higher end bottles, you get that better blend of smoothness with the bitter kick given off from the tannins. I also tend to think that the flavors are a bit more sharp. You can taste the oak/pepper/whatever very clearly and it's not masked by a multitude of other tastes.

I think a large part of the price, however, is just regionality. You're not going to find a ton of expensive wines from Central California or Washington like you will from Sonoma or Italy or France. It's cheaper to produce in these locations and just not as sexy and a similar quality of wine can have a huge variance in price.

Also, when you go get an $80 bottle of wine at a restaurant, that same bottle of wine is $20 or $30 or $40 at a local store.

I see what you are saying. I haven't had really expensive wines but there are some I have that taste almost buttery at the end and I really don't like that. It's sort of a heavy taste. There's a Cabernet from Robert Mondavi that I like and I don't get that taste. every now and then my wife and I feed the boys and while they are eating we prepare a meal for ourselves. The other night we made a steak and enjoyed it with the Mondavi Cabernet and it was great.

I can DEFINITELY taste the difference between a high-quality, expensive one versus a more "everyday" one.

That's not to say the everyday ones are "bad"....but some of the greats are oh-so-great.

I just read this for the first time...As for wine I don't drink anything but Miller Lite and Jack Daniels. I work all day Friday so me and my girlfriend celebrated St. Patrick's day one day early. Well she must've drank a little too much wine and was up all night throwing up and did not get much sleep. So when I read the title of this thread I laughed real hard.

                    Re: WINE sleppers....

I'm slowly turning into a wine slepper. In my younger days it was beer and spirits but now that i'm drink more for taste than to get hammered I've been drinking more wine. I agree about Wine headache's being brutal if you overdo it so i generally limit myself to at most 2 or 3 glasses with dinner. I generally prefer red's like Melot's or Cab Sav's etc but i'll pretty much drink most varieties.

My wife is pretty big into wine and we are in a wine club so we get probably a dozen bottles a month or delivered to the house and we are pretty lucky because Australian wine is great quality and there has been a bit of oversupply in recent years so prices are pretty cheap.

I agree with you guys that there can be a pretty big difference between a very cheap bottle and a mid priced one but i don't notice as big a leap when i have tried very expensive stuff. I still get real cheap ones occasionally because it's kinda fun trying to find a diamond in the rough, kinda like drafting a 2nd rounder in the nba draft who becomes a star.

I did a wine tour of our top region a few years ago and we went to a vineyard called Penfolds and they sell this bottle called 'The Grange' which is there very top of the line bottles that retail for well over 1k each. I asked the lady behind the counter does anyone actually buy that and she pointed to this old guy out the front of the store who was having two cartons of the grange put into the back of his Bentley.

The wife and I bought a nice bottle that they recommend keeping cellared for 10-15 years if possible so we have kept that bottle aside and we have written a date on a removable tag on the bottle so we can drink it at our 10 year wedding anniversary. Hope it doesn't taste like crap after all that.

Barefoot makes some very good wines at a cheap price. $4.99 a bottle.

I like the White Z as it goes with pretty much anything.

Picked up this beautiful bottle yesterday! It is a mixture of 3 types!

About to crack it tonight or tomorrow... will let everyone know the outcome, but I have a great feeling!!!

I notice as I get older, I am definitely turning into a Wine chaser. Rather enjoying it too, and I tend to lean more towards a (reds) Chianti, Merlot, Shiraz, Syrah, etc. and some heavy Italian wines.

Had a Twin Vines Shiraz (Washington St) the other day, was amazing... Had a bold oaky taste initially, and a nice smooth sweet aftertaste... definitely a fan!

I went to the Biltmore during the spring and tried out the wine tasting there. It was my first time ever.

2 hours later, completely smashed and obnoxious. Oh well, **** it, shouldn't have made it free and kept letting me get drinks.

                              I found this right here...

But what I personally as a cook/chef like to do, is not pair my wines to food, but my foods to wine... it works out better. It is more of an unorthodox mentality... but I would rather go to the wine-works, pick out a wine I want to try, then pair the food to it... not worry about pairing the wine to the food that most people do, because then you are missing out on a whole different level a palette adventures!

So you are definitely on the right track!

I enjoy the occasional glass or 3 of red wine as well. Usually a merlot or cab sav fan but also enjoy some white wine every now and then as well (sav blanc's are my favourite).

In recent years there has been a glut of decent wine grapes here in Australia so wine prices has really dropped. At one stage you could get clean skin wines from our most highly regarded region (the Barossa Valley) for less than the price of milk or bottled water.

The wifey loves wine and that has some great benefits for me as well.
