    Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Guitar...my favorite hobby. I love just jamming to my fave songs and improvising. I learned when I was 16, that was 3 years ago. I taught my self everything I know, learned to play just by learning songs by my favorite bands. Eventually I got good enough to now, where I can make up my own stuff and improvise over certain chord progressions. I like learning at my own pace, rather than someone else teaching me. Plus I don't have the time or really the dispensable income to get lessons. I find it more satisfying to teach my self. I feel a lot more accomplished.
    Here's my setup
Schecter Damien 6(it's so BA, it's got pearl bat inlays) w/ EMG HZ Pickups(great pickups)
Line 6 Spider III Amp 30 watts. Awesome amp.
Digitech RP250 Effects pedal. This thing has so many effects and amp models its ridiculous.
Standard Strat modded with Seymour Duncan Invader pickups and my own personal paint job, of which I am very proud.

I like metalcore, hardcore, alt rock and new school punk rock type stuff. that's where a lot of my influences come from. My style is quite a blend of varying styles, it's kind of a cross between hardcore, with a tinge of 90's punk rock and includes something that reminds you of The Edge from U2. That's the best I could describe my style.
    Guitarists I list as influences
Tom DeLonge(by no means great, but he's in my fave band, and his style has heavily influenced me)
Jimi Hendrix(do i even need to say anything?)
The Edge(i love what he can do with the guitar and his sound is epic)
Tom Morello(love his style, very unique)

      Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Well I have resolved that around Christmas time I will be buying myself an acoustic. I leave for bootcamp in October and I'm thinking about grabbing the acoustic and playing it in my free time once I start my school for my job (I will be in school for about 2 years. 7-4 will be school and then studying and free time after that). I figure instead of dropping some money to buy some video games because all of them are going to stay with my little brother, I should try to pick up a new hobby. I'm really looking forward to this. I played trumpet in the middle school band and dropped it in 8th grade because of athletics. I kinda wish I could have figured out to do both. I love music and it saddened me that I had to drop it.

Like I said really looking forward to getting into some music again. I know it will be tough but I will have a lot of free time to practice and get better.

        Bump.

For those of you guys that taught/are teaching yourself, what materials are you guys using? I would like to either get a DVD or maybe some kind of interactive software, but I haven't really started looking. I have a book from a couple years ago, but the writing isn't that clear. My dad has an acoustic guitar so I will be learning on that.

I didn't really use any materials or software. I looked up a few tabs and just picked away. Youtube would probably help and you don't have to pay for the service.

I still don't know hardly any chords but I can play pretty well. I'm sure I've got some bad tendencies from not being taught by someone, though.

Youtube would be a great, free way for you to learn some guitar basics. There are tons of videos ranging from song tutorials, chords tutorials, blues, rock, etc. I wish Youtube was around when I started playing back in high school.

So, this past week I started teaching myself mainly with the aid of a computer program to provide some kind of structure. Starting out with simple G chord, so easy enough.

Anyway, I'm learning on my Dad's acoustic guitar, but I was wondering what guitars you guys started on? I want to learn on an acoustic, but I also want to set a goal/reward for myself and was thinking maybe by the middle/end of Summer look at picking up an electric. Obviously I'm pretty far off from there, but its nice to have something to work towards.

I started on a Fender Stratocaster about three years ago and haven't looked back from it.

Some people say that learning on an electric is easier because there isn't as much action and it's just easier to fret in general (strings on an acoustic are heavier), but if you learn on an acoustic going to an electric from that should be no problem.

Eventually, I want to find a Gibson Firebird VII, and the at-least $2000 it's gonna cost me to buy it. Soon enough.

Yeah, that's what I have heard about the acoustic and am experiencing now. My poor little pinky finger, haha.

How much is a good price range for a "first-time" electric? I obviously am not looking to get something fancy, but something that I won't "outgrow" in a couple years.

What kind of finger exercises do you guys do to warm your fingers up before playing?

Krioniq, what kind of strat did you get?

I just start with scales. Start slow and speed up.

I've been going to this site for years now, great stuff on there from absolute beginner right on through the final stages of intermediate players.

My setup: Currently playing with my 85 Charvel--active pickups. I also have an acoustic and a BC Rich 7 String Beast.

I'm playing through Logic on my laptop, using an M-Audio interface, but these days I'm mostly practicing unplugged.

Anyone have any tracks recorded that we can hear?
Check out my sig for the link to the myspace music page, it's mellow, not totally polished.

I'd love to try out Logic, I mostly use Reason 4 but it's not the best for what I'm currently producing.

I'm self taught and not very good. I just watched his lessons (beginner D chord) and I already see something I'm doing wrong..Yikes..maybe I should go through all the lessons on there..

Lot's of people play thing in totally unorthodox ways, I'm sure I have a ton of bad habits but always follow this rule... if it sounds good it is good, if it sounds s**t it is s**t.

With that being said sometimes when left to our own devices we do things the hard way, when there's much more efficient ways to do what we're doing.

The sites definitely worth taking a look at though.
