    Re: The OS Guitarists thread

With Black Friday now gone did anybody pick up any new gear?

I am getting my first guitar and amp in a few weeks. A buddy of mine is going to let me buy one using his Guitar Center Card (0% interest for a year). He will actually be negotiating the price for me since he has dealt with guitar center in the past and knows his stuff when it comes to guitars.

I am getting a Fender Mexican stratocaster. Haven't decided on a amp as of yet. Have my eye on a couple different ones. One is a Fender tube amp, 10in speaker. Another is a fender nontube amp with 2 12in speakers. They are both going for the same price.

A little bit of everything. Rock, blues and some country. I'm into classic rock and blues (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepherd etc.).

If you're tying to decide between a tube amp and a solid state, check out this article http://musicouch.com/instruments/tub...id-state-amps/ It hits on the pro's and cons of each.

If you're just starting out, I'd go with a Solid state, they're the perfect practice amp. Tube amps have a better sound imo, and are better for live performances and recording, but aren't really necessary if you're just practicing.

I agree, do some research like he said. It's a tough call but the negatives of a tube amp is primarily the maintenance. They're more sensitive to being knocked around and tubes will wear out and should be replaced on some sort of schedule (people have varied ideas on how often).

The positives are a usually sweeter sounding tone and real distortion (as opposed to simulated digital distortion)

I know first hand about both sides as I have a sweet sounding Mesa Boogie amp that's been sitting in my closet for 2 months because I can't afford to get it checked out. I've never had an issue with any solid state amp.

What kind of Strat are you looking at? The new Black Top series look really good. I really like the knobs and the black pickguards are a nice touch.

I would think, for the money, and this being your first amp that a solid state amp would be the best bet. Just turn them on and jam. I've heard you can damage tube amps if you're not careful with it. Personally, I would love to get a Fender bluesboy tube amp a year or so down the road.

Not sure what your price range is, but I have to recommend the 15w Peavey Vypyr. That thing is pretty sweet. It sounds nice, a lot of different tones, a lot of good effects, just a steal at $100 bucks. I actually had a harder time picking out an amp then I did a guitar.

A guy at work got an old, really used Gibson SG body bass. It looks bad ***. Hopefully I can I hear how it sounds soon. Maybe get a SB bass and Les Paul jam session going.

I asked for a Standard Tele for Christmas. Not sure if I will get it or not, but I would love it. Some songs just don't feel right with the Les Paul. Maybe I need to experiment with my tones a bit more.

I'm getting a Fender Mexican standard strat. The blacktops are nice but not looking to get a double humbucker as my first guitar. Want that classic strat sound.

Carol of the Bells. The version below is a metal version by one of my favorite bands, took me all of 5/10 minutes to learn this. It's a blast to play.

Ha, that's pretty cool. Have your guitar tuned to drop C to play it though, which I happen to do, so i might learn this real quick.

I've got a jackson set up for low tunings. Metal is my main style, but i find lower tunings in general give more flexibility for me.

Bought this (used) for myself for Christmas.

I have no idea how to use it properly yet, and I've never played using a pedal of any sort before, but I like having a lot of sound options at my disposal and I think this will fit the bill nicely.
