    That's actually pretty good!

I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar and actually own an acoustic along with an electric.

The main reason that I want to learn how to play is to put my lyrics that I write to use and I would love to cover some Metal songs acoustically. Just the way some of them sound, in my opinion, would be perfect for the acoustic guitar and maybe even draw in a new audience to the real metal scene. (Not weird screaming metal. More like Trivium, Metallica and The Sword.)

Trust me, I can do muuuuuch better haha. Both vocally and guitar-wise. But that kinda stuff just makes women swoon, haha. I was reading the song off the monitor as I sang it.

And I agree, a lot of hard rock and metal sounds amazing done on acoustic.

Jeez, how did I not come across this thread sooner? I've been playing about 9 years, self taught. Pretty much any style..metal preferred. I had a couple videos up on youtube, I'd gladly make some more if any are interested.

I feel really dumb for missing out on this thread. Going to go read the backlog to get caught up.

EDIT: WHAAAAAAT, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY COHEED AND CAMBRIA FAN ON HERE. I have a tattoo based on elicoleman's avatar.

Hey, what's your Youtube page? I'd love to check out some of your stuff.

And no way man, I effing love Coheed. Seen them 8 times, including driving 8 hours to Chicago to see Neverender back in 2008. Plan on driving to Atlanta to see Neverender: SSTB in April. Actually listening to Year of the Black Rainbow right now.

You'll have to show a picture of the tat.

Anybody know of any good sources of information for playing with a slide? Pretty much all I'm doing with mine is messing around doing scales and some arpeggio stuff, but don't really know any theory or anything behind it.

I'm not much help, but I know open tunings are used quite often by slide players (I'm sure you knew that)

                Re: The OS Guitarists thread

I would stick to improvising melodies on one string for now. Its a great way to learn to think melodically rather than in terms of 'guitar licks' and shapes, which most players seem to do. Playing slide should actually be quite helpful in this.

Open tunings are cool but its great to learn how to play in standard when your first starting out. Then try just altering one string. eg. drop your A to a G and then you can create some cool stuff with a slide.

Alternate tunings are great fun but can be really impractical if your ever performing live. Either you need a whole bunch of different guitars or you need to be a tuning maestro. In my first year of my guitar degree we actually had to play a tuning study. It was basically extracts from about 5 or so different pieces all in different tunings. In between each piece you had 30 seconds to get in tune. Great times...

Anybody know of any good standard tuning slide songs? I haven't found much; did learn Amazing Grace though. Mostly I've just been playing the D,G,B strings together for major chords and then G,B,E for minors.

I started learning a little bit before , but never got into it. I think I have basic guitar lessons preloaded on my Mac tht I started to use. I would LOVE to learn/play acoustic, but since my dad has like half a dozed electrics laying around, the purchase is a bit hard to justify lol

I'm going to pick playing guitar as a hobby. I have little music experience (I played the baritone in high school).

Any recs of how to pick out a cheap, basic guitar? I'm interested in acoustic only. Anyone have any recommended basic guidebooks or lessons. I was planning to buy a book and then you youtube as well.

The biggest thing for a beginner is to develop some type of practice schedule/routine. For me, it was important to see some kind of progress; no matter how little, as long as I could tell I was progressing I was satisfied.

                        http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-00...nersCourse.php

That is what I used for developing a practice schedule and routine. I had already been working on a couple chords before I went to his site, but he definitely gives you focus. He also shows simple but very effective practice routines that are helpful with building speed and strength. Personally, the one-minute changes was the best routine to do I thought. Timing myself and being able to bench-mark myself was key to my progression and it was nice actually seeing myself get faster.

I wish I had started scales sooner. I think beginners are intimated by them, but they are really helpful in building an early understanding of theory and of course getting to know the fretboard. Plus, fingering scales helps with speed and stretch. I've been working on the C major scale the past couple of weeks. It is quite simple once you know the intervals and then of course that can then be transposed to other notes. Plus, understanding scales is helpful in developing and understand chord progressions. I know everybody is different and some people can just read stuff and know it forever, but with music theory a lot of what I tried to read would be either too much at once or just incomprehensible to me; however, just having that stuff in the back of my mind has helped me "discover" and figure out music theory for myself so to speak. Once those breakthroughs happen, it all seems too simple and not at all as intimidating as I had felt at the beginning.

As for a guitar, you don't want to spend too little or else you're going to get junk that won't last. I'm not sure what your price range is but I'm sure you can get a decent/good acoustic for 200 or less brand new. I recommend going on musiciansfriend.com and just browsing and make sure to read reviews.

                              Volume pedal. Probably, maybe delay.

My amplifier has reverb/delay/flanger/chorus/tremolo/phaser, so the only thing I need is my Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah. That's a really underrated, versatile wah. It can be either a normal wah or spring loaded with the flick of a switch. Pretty cheap too. Modifiable EQ settings on it as well.

Sorry, that came off like a sales pitch. Just love that pedal.
