    NyQuil

Hey guys. Say I were to take some NyQuil Cold/Flu right now (well its actually the CVS equivalent) but I don't really have a cold/flu, just trying to get to sleep. I have no illnesses/alchohol at all.

    So my questions...

    1. Is it OK to take if I feel fine?

    2. If I have my alarm set for 9, will I still wake up to my alarm on like 7 hours of sleep or does this stuff really do a number?

    Thanks.

    Re: NyQuil

All depends on you, some people get knocked out and have a Nyquil hangover all day, other people it barely affects them sleepwise.

As for taking it when you're not sick, I wouldn't worry about that. I'm not convinced that all Nyquil does is knock you out when you're sick anyway, I don't think it makes you feel any better outside of making sure you get enough sleep. I've done it enough times in the past and never had a problem.

I recommend taking 2 Benadryl. They're the "PM" in Tylenol PM and I actually asked my doctor and he told me to take 2 Benadryl (antihistamine) if I wanted to get to sleep easier (obviously not something you do regularly though).

You'll be fine in 7 hours.

I don't think the Nyquil would hurt you, but obviously that's medication you don't need so not the most ideal of sleep aids.

Thanks guys. I tend to be back and forth between school and work and home and I spend various nights at various places so I keep a backpack full of "just in case" stuff with me usually. I have this NyQuil rip-off with me but haven't used it yet. Should I just replace it with Benadryl? That stuff definitely knocks me out, but I only use it with allergies.

I guess the main concern with the NyQuil and Benadryl is using despite being healthy.

        Thanks again.

I used to have a bit of trouble getting to sleep, but my doctor just told me to try benadryl sometimes instead of giving me some prescription.

Now I don't have any troubles sleeping, but benadryl's non habit forming. Obviously wouldn't want to be doing it every night, but I doubt even a couple times a week would be bad.

I tend to find that NyQuil isn't very effective as a sleep aid.

I generally feel far more tired after taking NyQuil than I do just having a night of low sleep.

I would just get some 'PM' OTC drug. Don't take NyQuil or other drugs for illness when you don't have any. Your body can build up a tolerance and then it might not work when you need it too.

Yeah...that's what I was doing and it's fine, I just personally don't like taking Tylenol, so when I asked my doctor he said the "PM" stuff was really just benadryl...

I think all the other junk in NyQuil can cause more of a "hangover" than Benadryl...just depends on how your body handles stuff too.

I try and stay away from any sleep aid. I'm afraid I'll get too used to it and depend on it to fall asleep in the future.

Nyquil (and its various generic counterparts) and I do not mix. I have the craziest borderline acid-trip dreams and can't sleep for more than 15 mintues at a time. Really weird...

                            ILCHILL,

First and foremost. DO NOT take tylenol if you don't need it. Excessive use can damage your kidneys. That's why they have people take Aspirin or Ibuprofen for daily and long term use.

If you want a decent sleep aid I suggest: Simply Sleep by Tylenol. It has NO Tylenol in it. It's just the PM part of it. It works well, but make sure you have an 8hr window to sleep because you will feel a little drowsy when you first wake up.

I've made the mistake of taking them 4hrs before I need to be up. Then when I do I'm in a slight haze for about 3-4hrs.

It's SAFE and Non habit forming.
