    Direct TV Question

So my brother recently moved into a new place with some roommates. They are looking at getting Direct TV (Sunday Ticket) about 4 years ago he lived with some other roommates that had Direct in their name and upon moving out they never paid their bill.

So my brother calls direct and they tell him he would have to pay off the previous bill in full in order to get service, WTF? The previous account was not in his name and they said he lived at the address and had service. The bill is like $400, but again it is not his bill. He has tried talking to them numerous times about the bill and he had no obligation to the contract because it was not his.

Is this a normal circumstance and if so what can he do? I told him to say he was not living there, and simply using it as a mailing address. He did that, but now they want proof of address.

    Any other ideas?

    Re: Direct TV Question

If he's with new roommates now, why can't he just leave his name out of it? Why can't the other guys just call and act as if your brother is not going to be living there? That way it's in their name and not your brother's. At least that way they have Directtv.

I don't think Directtv does a credit check. You mean they have bills with directtv they haven't paid?

Unless they owe Directv money their bad credit will not prevent them from getting Directv.
Also his name would have had to been on the old bill or they would not have known he lived at his old place.

I think he just paid a bill once and the old roommates paid him back or something like that, but pretty lame if you ask me.

Shouldn't be a problem then. I've got Directtv and I know If they wanted to get my credit report they would have gotten my socail security number to run it... otherwise it's impossible. His friends could probably get it in their name then.

hmm...I don't know. I would have wanted to hear the reason why it was a no go if I was your brother's friend. Sorry...don't get why unless he owed an old bill. Unless..they have to show a lease where they're renting now and your brother's name is on the lease. That might be a problem.

DTV does a credit check on all new customers. There is a high setup cost for DTV, so they want to get their money back in your service bills. Most likely your old address showed up, matched the address, and they don't want you back unless you pay. You can try to send them a deposit, usually that covers people with bad credit.

Sounds like he is pretty much screwed, which sucks because the account was never in his name. He did not sign the contract and now has to pay someone's bill to get service. DTV sucks
