    Dealing with Back Pain

    Anyone here have back pain?

I am only 25 and have been dealing with back pain since I was involved in an accident when I was 16 -- although it was a week after the accident I felt the pain and thus couldn't do anything about it.

Anyways, for those of you that deal with such pain (mine is lower back pain) how are you coping with it?

Do you have special exercises? When do you exercise your back? Does it only lead to temporary relief or a day of relief?

And has anyone tried Back2Life? Any experiences?

Well I am 15, but my mom has some serious back pain. She uses a heating pad when it hurts for the most part.

She has had surgeries, quorterzone(sp?) shots, etc.

Depends on the source of your pain...

If it's muscular, you need to strengthen your core torso muscles to take the strain off of the affected area.

Spinal issues tends to be surgical but can also be helped by core training.

Just don't get dependent on pain killers/ muscle relaxers for a problem that won't correct itself.

Yep, get a six pack abs. Also, heating pad helps.

I see a chiropractor. They do pretty solid on my body. I have more energy and less pain. I would say that it's worth a shot. The place I go to is ChiroOne. I'm not sure they're near your area but it's pretty solid. They speak on realignment of the spine. Check out that stuff. Also, finding exercises to strengthen the core. Start easy then build up.

                Re: Dealing with Back Pain

When I was 17 I slipped a disc into and ignored it for 6 months till the pain became excruciating. Eventually I had an MRI done and was order to get 3 months of physical therapy. I strengthened my core and my back muscles and have felt great ever since.

I recommend doing alot of crunches, reverse sit ups to work your upper and lower abs. Also they made me do this exercise where I'd get on my hands and knees and extend one leg outward and bring it back in. I'm not sure how else to describe but but after 3 months of doing these exercises and strengthening the muscles around the disc, it shifted back into place and I have been feeling
                much better.

I had a weird back/hip tweak, but I think it was a pinched nerve or something. I'd feel it down my right leg while stretching far, but it eventually got better and went away, now i don't notice a thing. Definitely sucked for a while, and there wasn't much I could do, but just gave it time and eventually I guess the nerve stopped getting pushed on or whatever.

                    Re: Dealing with Back Pain

I started getting lower back pain my senior year of high school, not sure from what though because I was pretty good shape back then. Anyway it got so bad it was affecting my involvement in athletics so I saw a chiropractor. He straightened me pretty good then gave me a list of exercises/stretches to do anytime it hurt. Since, anytime I strain my lower back or hurt it somehow I just go through those stretches and try keep some good posture for a few days and I'm usually good as new.

You should definitely get it checked out and see if it's muscular, spinal or something else. Whatever it is, if you ignore, it's not going to go away - I would say mgoblue go lucky in his case. I saw my dad ignore his back pain for years until it became so crippling he couldn't walk or even sit without being in excruciating pain. Three surgeries and two years later he's finally over the majority of it, but you never want to get to that point.

I'm in the same boat... hurt myself when I was younger and it crops up now and then and is really debilitating when it gets going. I've heard great things about this treatment -- it focuses on regaining your original comfortable posture and thinking about how your body is moving while you walk, etc.: http://www.alexandertechnique.com/

I can't exactly vouch for it since I haven't signed up for a course, but several friends swear by it and the medical research seems to back that up.

                        Re: Dealing with Back Pain

I am dealing with something similar right now. But mine is in my neck. I went to the doctor when my right arm was going numb from the elbow down. Come to find out I got a strained muscle and ligament in my neck that has the muscle swollen. So it is pinching a nerve that runs down my arm.

But the thing that was funny to me is they gave me lortabs and soma's. Soma's to relax the muscle and lortab for the pain. But this seems backasswards to me. Medication is not something I am thrilled about taken. I would rather a natural solution like yall are describing with excercise.

My cousin is a physical therapist so I called him up. He said it sounds like I have a slipped disk in my neck which releases some gas into the muscle fibers. Causing this ball or lump in my neck. He said message therapy would most likly fix the issue.

At the moment I am not taking the medication until I find a better option to fix the problem.

Sounds like a good plan! Sucks you've got the issues, but I'm with you in that I don't really like to take medication unless it's actually going to fix a problem. Aside from ibuprofin for aches and pains I don't really take pills.

I tried a chiropractor for my issue and i'm not sure if she helped a ton, I think I need to find a better one, but somehow mine went away with exercise and time....Not sure every issue clears up like that though, i may just be lucky.

Find someone who can help you without drugs, cause they just hide the pain, not solve the problem.

                            Re: Dealing with Back Pain

My tailbone hurts sometimes. Only when I lay in bed. If I get up a certain way this region on my lower back throbs with pain...And it almost spasms. I'm like maybe 10 lbs over weight...But other than that I am healthy. It's been doing it since I was 16 when I was in great shape (Now 20)

BTW I used to have crooked legs and I required to have leg braces. So maybe my back is not aligned right? It's only when I lay on my front side when I sleep...And it's very severe.

Any suggestions other than to lose 10 lbs? Because Im already doing that.
