Re: Ideas About Great Places To Live
Tampa/St. Pete meets you requirements... Nice beaches, Good Diversity (University of South Florida attracts a lot of ethinicities to the area), lots of sports (NFL,NHL,MLB, NBA( 1 hour away), and USF for college sports), lots of good night spots/restaurants. Housing is much more afforable now as well. Crime is like any other metro area with certain parts of the area that should be avoided. One negative is Traffic... it really sucks here but if you live close to your job you should be OK. Also, public transportation isn't great either but I am not sure that applies to you since I am sure it is no better in J-Ville.Comment

Re: Ideas About Great Places To Live
I agree with everyone else who said Portland, OR. One of the prettiest and cleanest cities in North America.
- Racial diversity - Portland is very liberal and accepting. Its a very good melting pot of races and ethnicities.
- A fun area, with lots to do or fun things nearby - I guess this depends on what you like to do. The Cascades (hiking, skiing) are nearby, the Oregon coast is nearby. The Columbia River separates Portland and Vancouver, WA (water sports). The Columbia Gorge is an hour away (wind surfing capitol of the US). There's a lot to do downtown. Seattle is 2.5 hours away. The Trailblazers. The Ducks and Beavers are a roadtrip down I-5. Etc.
- Low crime rates - In general the Northwest is safe. Portland is no different...last I saw they were close to 200th in crime rates, which is pretty low for a major city.
- Affordable (we're young) - Its much less the other major metro areas on the West Coast (SD, LA, SF, Seattle). I think I saw Cost of Living is 8-10% higher than the national average.
And don't listen to people who tell you the Northwest is full of rain. There are more days of rain than most places, but usually its a slight mist. The south and northeast get much more rain than Seattle or Portland (NYC gets 9 more inches of rainfall a year than Seattle).
Portland's problem right now is that unemployment has skyrocketed in Oregon (highest in the US) So keep their job market in mind.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Yeah I am not just being "proud" or anything, but it's awesome in Portland. Plenty of places to eat and to go. It's not too big, but certainly not to small. The roads are pretty easy to drive on (Unlike Seattle) and there is always something going on. All you have to do if you want to go do outdoor stuff is take a half hour ride North. There is fishing, camping, ect.
Not only is it a clean upbeat city with nice people...You can also do things outdoors. It's a nice duo.
Job rates are low up here. So unless you are moving here for you're existing job or school....Do not come up here.Comment
