    Uhmm... What?

If you don't keep your head down you will do nothing but top the ball.

I mean he is sort of right, you don't keep looking straight down at the ground after you swing. Your head should follow the rest of your body. But do not raise your head or the rest of your body will raise up and you will top it.

And no, don't let the club hit your back at the end of your swing.

That is actually some good advice about pausing. It shouldn't be an entire stop though. Your back swing should just be slower than your downswing. Don't use all your force to try and stop the club at a certain point to start coming back down. That is what will cause a pause and your good tempo.

I love golf debates as much as the next guy - but the main thing with your head is actually in regards to your SPINE. Do not raise your SPINE, your head can be as high or low - look at Stack and Tilt compared to Jack Nicklaus, the key is in the SPINE.

The club hitting your back on the follow through is a key to let you know that you have 'swung' through the ball and not just hit at it. Sure there are some good methods that require you to be a swinger or a hitter - a.k.a the TGM method (The Golfing Machine).

I agree with you ollie on the last part - no it's not a complete stop at all - it's not even a pause. It's more mentality (which is what tempo is) than anything. What you feel you could be doing might not actually be close to what you're doing at all.

Sorry I pissed you off... But if you have ever been to a golf course, you know how much alcohol is involved in golf.

I never said to drink and drive, for all we know someone else (sober) could drive the golf cart.

              But enjoy the soap box!

If you are serious about playing golf and it's not a once in a while thing. I would get lessons they are invaluable now. Having never played you can have them build you a good swing before you develope bad habit. Second, this goes more to if you plan on playing often. Get fitted for your clubs. When I got my G10s they added an extra inch onto my irons. The first time I addressed a ball with them, I felt the difference.

Since I just got a job I'm finally buying a set of clubs. I'm getting the same exact set my uncle has (Nike Sasquatch driver, Nike NDS irons), except I'm just getting a cheap crappy 3 wood because I suck at hitting that club. I was amazed at how cheap the driver was, because that thing performs every single time I hit it.

Good stuff in here guys. I'm looking at picking up a set of clubs and getting some lessons. Doubt I'll play more than maybe once or twice a month, so I'm not sure how much I want to invest in clubs though.

Well you are in luck in some regards. If you want a nice set of beginners clubs I would look into the Taylor Made Rac Irons. ($399 at most places.) Just about every thing at the golf specialty stores is on sale. They are getting rid of all their 08 stuff because it seems that every even year most club makes bring out their best new stuff. Except for the Taylor Made R series drivers. I was in golf galaxy two days ago and found a Nike Sumo hybrid 2 iron for $89.99 with another 10% off (They had stiff flex and I wanted regular and showed it to them at a rival website).

So it is a good time to look into buying equipment. I also saved about $60 on 2 shirts and Shorts at the same time.

I'm 6'3, are there certain lengths of clubs that I should be looking at? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to golf equipment.

I'm 6'2. I got professionally fitted when I bought my new Ping's. They added about 3/4 of an inch to my clubs, which I noticed the second I addresed the ball I was taller and my stance felt more natural. You can, buy drivers, woods and any hybrid long irons you may get off the shelf, but for your other irons you may want to get fitted for them.
