    Log Home Kit

Hey fellas, does anyone here have any experience with the Log Home Kits you see from Log Home manufacturers? Just wondering what the turn key price for those homes are, if you purchase the package. Just bought some land, now just have to figure out what I'm going to put on it. I see various log home packages through different sites, Lincoln Logs, American Log Homes, etc for cheap-expensive, but have never seen one being assembled.

So the question is, does anyone have any experience putting one together? Difficult? Costly?

Only knowlege I have is second hand.

A few years back, I attended an after work party at a house next to a 3/4th finished log home. When I went over to check it out, the party host told me it wasn't safe and the inspectors had shut the building down during various stages despite a professional company doing the assembly.

Once agian, second hand info but the place did seem a bit rickety.

Out of curiosity how much land did you buy Will? My dad owns 40 acres in Clarksville TN. It was his dream to one day retire and have a little farm. Not going to happen since his land in on US route 41. Commerical on both sides of him and residential behind him.

I bought 10 acres, most of which is a wooded lot. There is already a log road going through the property, so a road is already there, minus the gravel/asphault. There is probably around 4 acres worth of the land that is buildable, the rest is just basically a privacy barrier. It's a beautiful lot, with a rock cliff directly behind the flats.

Sounds like a nice quiet spot. I wanted to be invited to the house warming party.

All he has to do is pay off some of his buddies on the force and he will be rolling in dough.

                  Haha...

Honestly though, It's a beautiful spot. I'm getting ready to start some work, clearing off the land, and leveling it out. Then I'll see how things look. See what size of home I can build on the lot, without it being too cramped, layout, etc.

If you are planning on doing this yourself and need tips/help through the process this forum is really helpful...http://www.forestryforum.com/index.php Specifically this section http://www.forestryforum.com/board/i...oard,11.0.html
Full of guys who can answer all of your questions.

Also if you are thinking of doing it yourself check out "Alone in the wilderness" you can find it around *cough* the net, it's 60 mins long and shows the guy building everything from the cabin to bowls and tools from trees on his land great film.(It's old though)

Youtube only has the first 10 mins.

I'm guessing though that you are looking for something a bit more modern. But if it's a place to get away to it doesn't have to be fancy just functional. It's still standing 40+ years later and tourist's hike out to check it out.

                      Re: Log Home Kit

My uncle bought some land in the northernmost point of New Hampshire. He went with a kit and had a builder assemble it. It has a concrete foundation with a basement and some really big logs are used as supports so its something that required some heavy duty equipment. The place is a cabin for hunting, fishing, snow mobiling, and the like so it's not the type of structure ideal for year round living. The inside is all open with a double loft that is connected by a walkway. It's really nice and quite functional for its purpose but again its not really a "home." I know to do everything (the kit, builders, garage, furniture, etc.) it cost him under $180k but I don't remember exact amounts. Pictures if you're curious:
