Visiting NYC

Hey guys,

A friend and I are going to NYC next week on our way to Florida. We want to drive so that we can stop in a few cities on the way down.

Although we are only staying in NYC 2 or 3 nights, I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to stay and eat at a decent price, and some maybe lesser known attractions. Im thinking Ellis Island, 5th Avenue, watching a broadway show... not sure what else.

It sucks that in NYC, your parking isnt included in your hotel room price, as in other major cities Ive been to across the world.

So ya, any ideas for a good time at a decent price would be great. Promotion codes or whatever are welcome.

NYCites don't have enough parking for ourselves...you want us to start accommodating tourists!

Anyway...there was recently a thread about this same thing...with some very good suggestions in it.

Just FYI.....for anyone planning on visiting NYC during Opera Season....try....seriously to get a ticket to one of the performances. You will be amazed. Of course you probably won't be able to land La Boheme, Don Giovani or La Triviata....but perhaps Norma or the Barber of Sevile would be available.
Opera Season is September to May.

Parking in NYC.....

When you say "NYC" do you just mean Manhattan, or are you open to the other boroughs? You can stay in a Best Western in Brooklyn off of 4th Avenue, a couple blocks from the train station. You'd be in Manhattan in about 20-30 minutes. Plus I think there's actually parking there. It's somewhere around 36th Street.

Well, I have been to Mexico City, Sao Paulo who have more people, Rio, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Sydney, Melbourne, London, Lisbon (most beautiful city of all), Porto, Buenos Aires, Aukland, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Roma among others -- all amazing city with extreme tourism, heavy in cars and people, etc, and NEVER had an issue. They create underground or attached parking...

I dono, just thought maybe some ritzier places would have some parking.

Tough to compare.
NYC is only 462 square miles.(all five boroughs)
Manhattan Island proper is only 22 square miles....while the other cities you mentioned as being more populated are well over 550 square miles each. That's a lot more room than Manhattan Island.(even though Manhattan itself only has 2 million of the 9 million people(documented!) in N.Y.)
NYC is an OLD city(meaning the building of the larger buildings and skyscrapers)....a lot of it built without the thought of parking vehicles. To try and retrofit parking in now is nearly impossible.
Just keep that in mind.

We're congested as hell here in NYC; Hell, NYers complain about parking all the time.

Idiots don't know how to park and hit your car ALL THE TIME. Ugh. That's what happens with so much parallel parking.

Taking a broadway show is certainly a suggestion... ever thought of taking in a baseball game?

I honestly suggest leaving the car somewhere and taking the train walking all around the city... plenty to see and do. Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, South Street Seaport, Battery Park... tons of places to go that are really enjoyable.

LOL at parallel parking... How about alternate side of the street parking? I remember I used to get on my wife because, after I'd found a good parking spot for Monday morning, Sunday night she wants to take the car to go shopping with her sister. Parking spots had more value than gold, LOL

LOL! Yeah, alt. side parking is known to start a fight here and there...

Gotta love what they do in Harlem: Double park until the street sweeper comes through then move their car right back to the same spot.

I know that in SF and Portland they don't have free parking. Parking is annoying, but at least forces you to use mass transit. lol. Good times...

HA!!! That's what I would do... The lesson it taught me was to not take off on days that weren't Wednesday. I would decide I needed a mental health day, but since I hadn't planned on it, I didn't have my car in the right spot. So it kinda ruined my plans to sleep in when I'd have to wake up and go double park the car before the street sweeper rolled through. Ah, the lessons of life in NYC.

As for the baseball game, good idea!

Im thinking Yankees cause Im a Blue Jays fan, thus prefer American league. I'd like to see the Mets, but I don't want to go to Queens JUST for a game.

Basically, I just want to see some directions/instructions on what to see first so that I catch the most I can.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but it might help you too.

How's Washington Blvd in Jersey City area? There are some hotels a few blocks from the Path station there. I have to change from my normal Hotel in the city to there when the UN is in session because the hotel rates go over $350.

Assuming you're not traveling to isolated places in near-empty subway cars late at night (and aren't looking to pick fights or do something stupid), you'll be fine. Over the last few years, I've used the subways as a solo traveler in London, Paris, Rome, Sydney, NYC, Chicago, Washington, Buffalo, Oakland/SF, etc. and never run into any problems. Probably the sketchiest subways I've seen are Naples (Italy) and Philly. Nicest one: Munich.

Guys, I am staying at Wyndham Garden Hotel Times Square South (341 West 36th Street).

We check in at 6:00pm and check out at 11am (20th August to 22nd August). They want us to pay 40$ x 3 (days we are there) which sucks cause we're paying 40$ for the day we get there and it'll only be parked for 6 hours, then 24 hours at 40$ (which is fine, obviously), and then another 40$ for another 6 hours.

Thus, Im paying 120$ for 36 hours, when it should be 40$ per 24 hours.

Anyways, is there a safe place to park for cheaper?
