SD: One year already! I'm very proud of being here, and proud to work with Steve and the staff. It's been a great experience, and I'm sure it'll only get better!
BDoughty: You write the terrific "Splinters from the Pine" column for OS. You have also written for ESPN, are there any aspirations to become the next Jim Murray?
SD: You've got a keen eye, Brent... For those who may not be familiar with Murray, he wrote for the LA Times for nearly 40 years, and in the process, became one of only four sportswriters to ever win a Pulitzer Prize. He's the gold standard for sportswriters today.
I'm obviously nowhere near Murray's caliber, but you're right - he is an influence. For example, my penchant for one-liners is definitely along the lines of the "Murray column".
I'm just trying to write an entertaining column that touches on the world of sports and sports gaming in a way that's easily accessible - like the reader and I were shooting the breeze at a sports bar...
I don't always hit the mark, of course - but I'll keep trying!
BDoughty: What sports teams do you follow? Do you have a favorite sport?
SD: I was born and raised in Colorado, so those teams are near and dear to my heart. I'm no bandwagon jumper, but I'll follow any team that's a interesting story. This year, those teams were the Syracuse Orangemen (men's hoops), Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Wild, and the continuing train wreck that is the New York Mets.
Baseball's my favorite sport, but having been born in Denver, football's definitely in my blood, too.
I played baseball and tennis in high school, and I still follow tennis pretty closely, as well.
BDoughty: Tell us about the Drotar family?
SD: Let's get the first question out of the way: the last name's Hungarian in origin. However, I'm 75% Irish. The other 25% just happened to bring the odd last name with it...
I'm happily married to Amy, my wonderful wife of seven years, and we have a one-year old daughter named Shannon - who's taken over our lives completely - not that we mind!
BDoughty: Other then sports gaming and writing, do you have any hobbies?
SD: With a one-year old? Not many...
When I can find the time, I'll play softball, tennis, bowl, or anything else I can compete in.
I'm also a big film buff, and an avid amateur astronomer.
