Re: College
I think I knew from the start, but it did not matter. Nearly all college degrees contain a basic core of general education classes and credits. There are masses and masses of college students who have no clue what they want to do for a living or major in when they first step on to campus. In fact, six times out of ten, if I ask a college freshman or sophomore what they're looking to major in, they don't know.
Point is, the first two years of college can be used as a time to get all of your general education classes out of the way. That serves as two extra years to get a feel for what you may want to do. You could even complete those general courses at a community college at an obscenely cheaper rate then just transfer the credits over to a university of choice.
In my experience, I had a few low end classes that had to do with my major sprinkled into my first two years, but I did not get to the real, method classes until my final couple of years. Also, if you pick a major and you have second thoughts, it can be changed.
In any case, if you have the means to go to college now and the only thing holding you back was this major thing, then go to college now. -
Re: College
I'm a freshman right now (and having a great time!). I knew I wanted to go into the computer field (IT). SU called me up one day after I'd applied and said they could pretty much guarantee me admission to this one school (the iSchool) within SU if I would change from applying to the business school to the iSchool. I chose the iSchool thinking that it was a perfect fit for me and if it didn't work out I could always switch out after my first year if I maintained a B average. The iSchool (School of Information Studies) is a computer/technology based school that is the number one school of its kind in America. I chose before hand, but almost none of my friends have any idea what they want to do. Only choose your major before hand if you are deeply attached to it. I love writing, but I think I love computers even more. If worse comes to worse, I can always change schools within SU if I choose.YNWA

Re: College
Yep. My scholarship money was based on finishing in 4 years. So I had no time for switching majors.
My advice is to pick a major that really interests you AND something you could earn a living at.
I wouldn't rule out a 2 year technical school. They teach you exactly what you need to know + give you experience so you can go into a career as soon as you get out.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 09-19-2009, 06:36 AM.Comment

Re: College
During my initial application process in high school, I had picked schools based on what I thought I wanted to do (sports management). After I left my first school, I had a change of heart, and decided I wanted to do medical imaging. But now, the school I want to transfer to doesn't offer that, so I need to find something else. Not an easy task.Comment

Re: College
I knew I wanted to do Political Science because it's what I'm most interested in. You can't major in sports, regrettably.Comment

Re: College
My gf got her 4 year undergraduate degree last year in something she only mildly liked. Now she's in a 2 year tech program doing something she loves.
You can always transfer to a 4 year school from a 2 year school.
4 year schools are more expensive, but you get more of a real life experience. Get to meet more diverse people.Comment

Re: College
I picked my school partially based on what I wanted my major to be (sports business) but I know many people that are in their second or third year and still undeclared. Some schools are more lenient than others, but a lack of a major should not stop you from going to school. IMO.University of Oregon
