So I was terminated but I have questions

I am a part time employee who has been working with the company for over a year. At first it was a summer job but then they would ask some of us to stay for longer when they needed our help. Anyway this friday i was let go, no big deal I already have a job lined up so its okay but it is the way they handled it. I did not recieve a call from a superior. The boss told a fellow employee to call and tell me. I have been told by the head of HR a while ago that since I had been with the company for over a year I am eligible for unemployment...so I will be trying to get that.

I want to know if the way they handled it was wrong. I am extremely angry about being with a company for 4 years and building friendships and have one of my friends (not my boss) call to tell me not to come back. Can they get in trouble for this?

I know it may seem childish but i want to be a thorn in their side if possible.

P.S. they got rid of me because they didnt need me anymore not for some bad reason. I work in SC which I think is a state with 'at will' work or whatever, meaning they can fire me without reason. All I was looking for was the respect to call me themselves to tell me they didn't need me anymore.

yeah, that's sort of below the belt. But why are you trying to get unemployment when you already have another job lined up?

Unfortunately companies are cowards when it comes to letting people go, if you have to make cuts fine, but don't be a ditch about it and a coward...Also is it a at will company?

That sucks. If I were you, I would've went to work acting, as if I didn't know anything and made the boss have a spine. That way you could at least get some answers and make them squirm.

I've been in management positions before and I alway's hated disciplining or firing my employee's but, at least I always had the decency to tell them to their face. If I where you and could afford it I would just draw unemployment and live the dream for a few months.

That is pretty crappy. HR doesn't let us get away with that here. If we need to let someone go we do it ourselves under the authority of HR.

On a side note you may want to post here. http://www.osatwork.com/forums/showthread.php?t=362597 LOL

          Good luck with evrything.

Yeah, that really weird, they didn't ask you to do an Exit Interview or anything?? Normally, as an employer there's certain steps they have to go through, to cover their bases.

Yeah, that was a dick move of them, but I don't think they're breaking the law at all. They shouldn't treat people like that, but I don't think it's legally mandated that you be let go by your boss or whatnot.

If you care about the reference, forget it and move on.

If you don't care, call your boss and ask him why he's such a ***** for not telling you himself and having one of your co-workers do it.

Well, I have to hire and fire employees constantly and I'll tell you this: If it was previously made clear to you that you were brought in on a temporary basis, then they can tell you they don't need you anymore at the leisure. However, if you were given the impression after your initial temp period was over that you were being brought on as a regular employee (part time or full time, doesnt matter), then they can't just "fire" you without previous documentation of poor work behavior. The only way around that would be a company doing mass layoffs to cut costs, which this was not.

So, if the latter situation describes your own, then you may have a foot to stand on there.

Not if it is a Right to Work state like Florida. Here, they can fire you with no cause what so ever.

                      Yah, very true.

Also, like someone said earlier, to the OP: you've already got a new job man, just suck it up and walk away. You'll waste more time "sticking it to 'em" than you will just moving on and enjoying what's ahead.

                      It's really not worth it.
