Tupac is my all time favorite, but i cannot believe nobody mentioned Rakim!!! Paid In Full was one of the best hip hop albums ever.

One thing for sure is Pac knew how to tell a story in songs like "Brenda's Got A Baby" , "Dear Mama" & "I Ain't Mad At Cha". He's lyrical in that.

Listen to all of Big L's stuff. Then if you are ever forced to listen to Jay-Z, notice how much of Jay's lines and rhyme patterns are re-hashed Big L stuff.

Notorious B.I.G. hasnt been mentioned either.

Might want to check out the "screw" era of Texas rap.

          D.J. Screw (obviously)
          U.G.K.
          Freestyle Kings
          Z-Ro
All this old Texas rap that used to be strictly underground has profoundly influenced today's mainstream.

For a little different style, check out Josh Martinez. (He's Canadian, so..... yea. I havent listened to any of his new stuff either so approach with caution) I really only listen to one track from him though called "Exile", its pretty cool.

WU-TANG CLAN 36 CHAMBERS OF DEATH!!!
listen to this album for a few years at least. one of the best ever.

Re: Help From Hip Hop/Rap Heads

Eric B. & Rakim first 3 albums. (Paid in Full, Follow the Leader, and Let the Rhythm hit em')
Boogie Down Productions - By All Means Necessary
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane.
            I could go on.....

With this lyrical stuff, battle rappers use vocabulary, heavy punchlines, and metaphors. So are they better than most studio rappers? I don't think so.

One thing Pac had over alot of rappers, was "no fear". He went at Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, and Mobb Deep. (There might be more, just can't think of them right now) He didn't hide it in metaphors, he said thier names. Wayne doesn't rap, it's the syrup doing the rapping. (that's he giggles and sounds spaced out so much)
Boy this habit is as bad as dope!!!

Well that's what I'm talking about. I've never heard Wayne tell a story like "Brenda's Got A Baby" or "I Ain't Mad At Cha". And sure Wayne can spit all those metaphors and stuff but half the time they're pointless ones that mean nothing to the song. For example, one song I've been listening to Wayne says, "I'm so rude I take food from a kid picnic, n****". Like WTF does that have to do with anything? Lol.

To me being able to rap all those metaphors and punchlines is nice but it doesn't mean anything if it doesn't actually relate to the song or the topic.

Re: Help From Hip Hop/Rap Heads

500bloc had a very good list of albums.

                Adding to that...

                Talib Kweli - Quality
                Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs
Genius AkA GZA - Liquid Swords
                Killa Army - Dirty Weaponry

Are among some of my favorite of all-time hip-hop albums.

Bingo! could not have said it better myself. It is one of the main reason why rap music sucks today. Battle rap is like And-1 basketball, a god awful product that has been pushed to the mainstream. For the most part it is inaudible nonsence over a beat.
I dont remember there names but they were allot of fun....

Re: Help From Hip Hop/Rap Heads

For someone to say 2Pac isn't lyrical, must not know anything about him or "everyone" he influenced.

                    Makaveli was damn lyrical.

But I digress, some other albums that are recommended are:

                    Lost Boyz
                    - (Lost Boyz Forever)

Mac Dre - (Young Black Brotha, Thizzelle Washington, Stupid Doo Doo Dumb)

                    3X Krazy - (Stackin Chips)

                    Juvenile - (400 Degreez)

E-40 - (Tha Hall of Game, My Ghetto Report Card, In A Major Way)

I'd be remiss if i didn't mention the greatest Producer/Rapper in the game.

DJ Quik - (Safe & Sound)

This next one needs mentioning also

                        Dr. Dre - (The Chronic)

                        Dogg Pound - (Dogg Food)

                        UGK - (Ridin' Dirty)
