    Working Overnight

Hey guys, just got a new job working as an overnight stocker. 11 PM to 7 AM. 10.75$/hr.

Never done anything like this before, so I was wondering if anyone here has and how they liked it.

The way I see it coming into it is I'll be sleeping when everyone else is working (8 AM to around 4 PM) and I'll be working when everyone else is sleeping. I'll still have that late afternoon and evenings to do stuff with family, friends, and my girlfriend. Also, I've never had problems sleeping or being tired, so I think I'll be fine sleeping when its light out.

Thanks for any insights. I just can't pass up that awesome hourly wage even if it means working some wild hours.

I used to work 12am till 8am while taking classes. You'll live homie.

Make sure you eat right and drink water. It's going to be pretty rough on your body.

And get black curtains in your bedroom.

      Good luck.

Its fine if you don't have people living with you, but a lot harder if you do. Your days off are the problem. My problem was not going to sleep when I got off. I did it for one summer but hated it towards the end.

Your lucky man. I use to work as a produce stocker but it was 2nd shift 2-10 pm usually so I had to deal with a lot of customers, and the 5 o'clock rush.

I wish I worked the overnight shift, quite, no people to deal with.

            Re: Working Overnight

I did overnights in retail for a couple years, it's not a bad gig. If you can go home and sleep until 4, you'll have no problems. My issue was that I always had the mindset that I'd get off at 6 or 7 and have the rest of the day free to do stuff. So I would end up making plans throughout the day, and then sleep around it. Not a good idea. Often times I would end up only getting 4 or 5 hours of sleep, and then dragging the rest of the day.

Days off are a pain too, as you have to make the decision to either stick with the third shift schedule and waste all morning and afternoon, or try to constantly rotate from third shift schedules during the work week, and then normal life during the time off. Most of the people I worked with tried to adjust their sleep schedule for days off, not easy.

But if you can figure out the sleep part of it, it's not bad

While in HS, I didn't work over night but I worked VERY early a 6am-12 shift. It was the best. As my friends were off to work in the summer, I'd be already done and free to enjoy the day!

It all depends where you are a stocker at. Because if you a stocker at a 24 hour store, then it will get annoying as hell when grave yard shift customers come in getting in the way.

But other then that it is a pretty sweet gig if you got a hands off manager.

That's the biggest problem people I know have had with working through the night. If you try to sleep at night on an off day you could have some trouble sleeping.

My friend did this when he work with BART. I think he would sleep like everyone else did on the first day off and then on the next day off he would go back to that schedule.

My two most favorite jobs were overnight jobs. The laid back nature of night work/crews just fitted me better.

My only problem was buddys/girls who figured that my sleep time (6ish am to 2 ish pm) was open time and would call or stop by because they had a day off. Couple of returning calls at 3am solved that pretty quick.

Yeah I plan on designating all hours from when I get off until around 4 PM as sleep time. It's very important to get a good sleep, not good to run on empty, if you will. The only time I'll get up earlier is for NFL Sunday's, if I work Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The off days are what I'm not sure of. I think I'll be able to get to sleep fine by 1 AMish after sleeping until 4 PM that day, but it's the day of work that I'm worried about. I think I'll end up just taking a nice nap at some point during the day of work so I won't be pulling almost a 24 hour period of no sleep. On a positive note, I noticed the breakroom is stocked with Red Bull's in the beverage machine. Never been a fan of energy drinks, but I may need a little boost. Then again, don't want to crash... so maybe a 5 Hour Energy would be a better option, if I need it.

The place is only open during the day, so no customer interaction. That was a big reason why I wanted to do it. I've never had an altercation with a customer in previous jobs (mostly as a waiter, host, or busser at restaurants), but some of the things customers do just irk me so much. One bad experience can ruin an otherwise good night. So I'm looking forward to not having to cater to the customer and put on that fake, nicey-nicey smile.

Yeah, I'm a very laid back person, so that's a big thing I'm looking forward to. They said the night crew is about 10 people and a manager, so it should be pretty chill while still doing some work. The hectic nature of restaurant business and the mind numbing boredom of an office job are not for me at this stage of my life. So I'm looking towards this new opportunity as a good change. Won't know how it goes until I try it, but I'm excited for the change.

Thanks to everyone else for their opinions too.

I've worked night shift just about my entire adult life. Don't do it too long. I'm a night person from birth, so I don't mind it. But do it too long and you'll find it hard to stay awake on afternoons off. Also, for people not used to it, you hit this wall around 3:30/4:30 AM. Either keep yourself busy @ this time, or get a nap on a break before it.
