        Re: OS Pups Thread!

Had a close call with my "new" baby on Saturday.
She isn't like my other dog, Smokey, in regards to sticking by the house at all. Nickie is a total "free roamer". Considering I'm on 9 acres and my neighbors on the lake all have at least 5...I thought she'd be okay. Even the road to my house isn't busy really....it ends in a cul de sac and there are only a handful of houses on it. I didn't want to have her tied up all the time.
But she was always crossing to get to the fields across the road(deer poop must be REALLY delicious.)...so I have been constructing a fence to surround my property(half of it anyway)....but fencing in about 2000 LINEAR feel is no easy task and in the interim .....Nickie got hit by a car.
She isn't injured badly...but was limping it up pretty good(no breaks or internal injury). It could have been worse obviously.
        Off to fencing.

My families had a rough history with dogs (we've had 4 of them in my 20 years of life, and the first 3 didn't make it past 3 years old), but our girl Bristol (named after the race track) is 7 years old now I think

That's scary, glad to hear she's ok! I know what you're talking about with the fence though. We fenced in somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre of our property and it took about 3 full days with up to 4 people helping at times. It helped that I borrowed a tractor with an auger on the back to do the posts. It's a good thing though because my current pup Bella (boxer) needs to be contained.

                  It's just me....with a one man power auger....but I haven't even started that yet.
I went and bought 20 rolls of the wire(green plastic coated) deer fencing and have been posting and nailing it to trees.....and then will follow it around with the actual fencing once I get "the Great Houdogi" in.(she managed to pull a "Great Escape" already, but burrowing under a section.
I'm now laying fallen trees along the bottom edge in order to keep her in line.
                  She's nuts.
At 3 months old ....still small enough to hold in one arm(that seems like an eternity ago already instead of just 1 year!) she was in the back seat of my pickup truck when I noticed a blur in my side view mirror. I stopped only to find her out of the truck! She launched herself out...I guess because she felt like it!
Maybe she doesn't like good food and the choice of 4 different warm beds(including the one my wife and I use!)

Anyone here have a dog 50+ lbs that tore an ACL? Just got back from the vet with news of a partial to full tear of my dog's ACL and I have no idea how surgery is for a dog with this injury

My sister's ~120 lb Rottweiler tore his ACL apparently carrying on in his crate one day. He had surgery and his leg was in a cast for a couple weeks then (I think) activity restrictions for a few weeks after the cast came off. Activity restriction of course goes without saying when the cast was on.

My mom's Newf also had 2 surgeries for a chronically luxating (dislocating) patella and it was pretty much the same thing except no cast in his case. They also thought he had a complete ACL tear, but found it was only a partial tear when the got in and decided to leave it alone. Had it been a complete tear, the repair apparently would have involved insertion of a plate and with a dog of Bruno's size, the concern there is of bending the plate if the dog becomes to active to soon after surgery. The surgery apparetnly differs depending on who does it because when Achilles (sister's Rottie) had his surgery, he didn't have a plate inserted.

The vet here plans on putting a plate in with what she called TPLO procedure.

With the Rottweiler, any signs of significant arthritis since the repaired knee?

Not that I'm aware of. I'll see her and the dog this weekend though, so I'll ask.
