    OS Vegetarians Thread

I definitely need some ideas. For this month (up until Thanksgiving), I will be a veggie dude. I am trying to detox my body.

    So I am not eating

    1. Dairy
    2. Meat/Poultry/Eggs
    3. Refined sugars

So I need some ideas. I can't eat salad all day every day. I know I will be eating a lot of beans and that isn't an issue for me at all. I can do that.
    Concrete evidence/videos please

There's tons of stuff you can eat...but you'll probably be eating a lot of tofu. It's actually pretty tasty if you cook it right. It's like a sponge so it'll soak up whatever it's marinating in. Whole grains are great too...

I've been a veggie for 8 years now...although just switched to eating locally raised chicken and bison that were grass (range) fed.

Sorry for not knowing anything but I didn't know dairy and meat were that bad?

I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but recently I've been cutting back my meat intake. My goal is to be vegetarian 4 days a week or 8 meals a week, essentially not eating meat at lunch or dinner. I rarely eat meat for breakfast. When I do eat meat I'm trying to eat smaller amounts, like an actual serving size.

I've made some good dishes recently. Veggie chilli, tofu/blackbean tacos, eggplant parmesan.

Honestly, just go to the library and get a vegetarian cookbook or use google. You'll find plenty of ideas

                That's pretty funny.

I'm 6'1" and 225 pounds and am a proud vegetarian. I may not be the most manly man in the world, but I am far from being a sissy.

I can feel you with the close-mindedness though. The way you look at male vegetarians is the same way I look at swill drinkers. Anyone that drinks light beer is pretty girly in my eyes.

My vegetarian black bean burgers and Chimay (just what I happened to eat and drink today) are way cooler than the average uneducated moron's chicken wings and Miller Lite.

Plus, being a male vegetarian and also being heterosexual has given me a HUGE edge with the ladies. I'm in a long term relationship now but before that I was hitting more home runs than Albert Pujols.

DC - If you are serious about detoxing then there are a million things I can suggest to you that I did when I first converted to vegetarianism.

Man, sarcasm on the internet is so hard to absorb. It was a joke, LOL. Thought it was pretty obvious with all the "would a man do..." threads started by DC.

Props for being a vegetarian, I have a few friends who are, male and female, and the stuff they cook up for potlucks, get togethers, at Thanksgiving, etc. are phenomenal.

                        Re: OS Vegetarians Thread

Being a vegetarian makes you learn how to cook pretty well unless you just live on frozen dinners and veggie burgers. That's one of the best parts about it... gets you familiar with using spices and aromatics to flavor everything instead of just relying on the taste of meat to bail you out.

And yeah, you can make veggie burgers just with ground-up black beans, lentils, cumin, onions, corn... just get the black beans to where they're a paste and everything should hold together pretty well. You can also add some egg substitute stuff to make it hold together a little better, as this recipe does: http://vegetarian.about.com/od/veggi...beanburger.htm

Then there's hardcore nutritional yeast/grain recipes that more closely replicate meat's texture/flavor, some of which are on this page: http://www.johnrussell.name/recipes/burgers.htm

Here's another one along the lines of the first one that sounded pretty good: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Best-of...rs/Detail.aspx

Cool, I just bought a 4 lb bag of black beans from the market last week so I am cool.

Just made 15 bean soup with a touch (large touch) of curry, rosemary, thyme, onions, garlic. Came out beautifully. But I don't want to eat beans THAT often, even though I know I will. I just love beans.

Here's a quick "list" of spice/condiment combinations and the corresponding food type:

Cilantro, red chile powder, cumin, garlic, achiote, lime, coriander (sometimes, mostly in soup) = Latin

Basil, oregano, Italian parsley, rosemary, lemon, garlic, fennel = Italian

Cumin, coriander, turmeric, curry (normally a combination of spices, yellow curry powder for example has a lot of turmeric in it), paprika, fenugreek, tahini/sesame paste = Middle-Eastern/Indian (they use a crapload of other spices, but these are the main ones for that area of the world)

Ginger, soy, yuzu, miso, kombu, rice vinegar, sesame oil = Japanese

Ginger, garlic, soy, rice vinegar, chile paste, bean paste, sesame oil, honey (mostly in glazes), star anise, cloves, 5-spice blend (contains several spices including anise) = Chinese

Cilantro, Culantro (sawtooth), Thai Basil, mint, garlic, chiles (Thai bird chiles being the main one), ginger, coriander, galangal, limes, curry paste = Vietnamese/Thai

Parsley, chervil, sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, lavender, fennel = French

Missing some herbs and simplifying things A LOT, but that might help with flavor profiles... don't use all of the things on each list at the same time, but experiment with combinations and see what you like.
