Wow 34 years already. I was 4 when it happen, so I don't remember it happening, but my mom is from that area, so she shared it with my brother and me. Sad song and sad story.

I live in Indiana now and that was on the front page of the newspaper. But anyway Lake Michigan is VERY violent and there are literally hundreds of ships at the bottom of the lake from violent storms. From the small to very large battleship size boats.

I've heard that song around 234987 times in my life, and I'm okay with that. Today is also my friend's birthday. I will notify her of the connection.

And I'm pretty sure it went down in Lake Superior, not Lake Michigan, for those scoring at home.

You are correct, just off Whitefish Point in Lake Superior. For those that would like to learn more, there are many books about it but one in particular I found very good is : Gales of November, The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Robert Hemming. I took a trip on one of the thousand footers when I was around 12 during the summer and the lakes can be violent then as well. Nothing like November but I couldn't imagine how bad it was on that day.

It was a terrible tragedy but that is one of my favorite songs of all time.

My father used to load freight onto that boat.

This. It's still a great song from a tragic event. I don't remember the event taking place, but the song reminded me to do some research when I was younger.
