What do people think of live feeding their pets?

My wife and I have had ferrets for a long time now and when we had the older ferrets we would periodically feed them feeder mice and live fish. They would get to hunt the mouse in the bathtub and would take the fish the fish out of a pan of water. With our new ferrets we have not done this yet but now that they are a year old I was thinking of starting it again.

The ferrets do receive health benefits from it and it is actually a common practice in Europe where ferrets have a much longer lifespan. It lets them get some of their instincts out and stimulates them so that they don't get bored.

Does anyone think that is wrong or barbaric?

No more barbaric than people feeding mice to snakes. Or killing mice in traps. Or poisoning them (okay, that one's worse than the others). Those feeder mice are meeting their demise in the jaws of some creature eventually, why not your ferrets?

And if it's better for the ferrets, why not? Unless you don't like cleaning up blood stains in your bathtub, go for it.

While I'm not a big fan of it.(I don't even feed the Oscar we have at the firehouse feeder fish)....I wouldn't consider it barbaric. As long as you're not prolonging the agony of their demise or just setting up some sort of fight between the two animals to no real natural end....
If those ferrets were in the wild, they would be doing that, right?
Barbaric is if you were have the two animals fighting each other(like dog or **** fighting) for no real purpose.

Go for it. I think that you should make the ferrets environment in your home closer to what it is in the wild. And that includes hunting.

I'm with this. The true barbaric thing to do would be to feed them nothing but manufactured pellets for their entire life.

Im all for it. They got to eat too. I would probably feed them outside though in the yard, less of a mess to clean up.

I was pleasantly surprised at this thread, I was worried for a second that it was something weird like feeding your bird with a worm in your mouth. As for the actual topic, I think it's fine. It's what they do naturally, killing their food.

My moms cat hunts mice for sport, at any given time their are proably 5 dead mice in my yard. The real problem is when my Dog gobbles down the dead mice...

Like someone said as long as your not doing it for fun, I don't see a problem with it. It is what they do naturally, my cat goes out in the field behind my house and hunts down mice all the time and my dogs attack birds for fun haha. But do it man.
