How much do you spend on Groceries?

For OS'ers who have kids, how much per month on average are you spending on Groceries?

This does not include eating out, just items bought each month at the grocery store.

My wife and I have an infant son and are spending about $350.00 a month. This includes baby food so I think we are doing well.

Anyways, was just curious how much everyone else spends.

I went to Giant Eagle 4 times between 11/5 and 12/2 and spent a total of $158.22. It's just me though.

$350 with a kid? That's some good budgeting.

I budget about $300 for myself a month, but always go over and end up spending between $350-$400. That doesn't even include takeout. I do waste a lot of food though, as I err on the side of tossing stuff out that may be old.

Me + Wife + Six Year Old Boy = Way Too Much

I know it's because we buy quality food, mostly organics for produce, very little pre-packaged prepared goods, and as high quality meat as possible. Still, it's costly, easily between $400 - $600 per month, with the spread depending on when we need our bulk goods (paper towels, TP, ground beef, etc. from Costco).

That also does NOT include when we go out to eat, and we eat a quality champagne brunch at least once a month in addition to a few pizza nights and two or so sit down, menu driven, dinners.

Well with my family it's about 400-450 a month.

If I lived on my own I figure I could get by on about half that or even less.

It also depends on where you live too. because in some parts of the country, certain things cost a whole lot more money.

About $300-$350 a month for me, the wife, and our 2 year old. Was more expensive when he was younger due to formula and more diapers, but he is now almost out of diapers, and obviously not on formula anymore. Those two things will really drive the cost up.

Re: How much do you spend on Groceries?

It's just my lady and I and we actually spend A LOT of money on groceries but we rarely go out to eat (fast food or sit down). One thing we noticed is the drastic difference in prices when purchasing "healthy" food. For instance, just to purchase 2 servings of blueberries (aprx 1.5 cups) costed us $4 which the food will not last more than a week before it spoils. Conversely, you can purchase a $1 hamburger (McD) or about 4 Totinos pizzas for that same price and those food items will either not go bad in a week or months.

At this point, we're spending $400+ a month on groceries all while going to Sams, coupon clipping, deal finding, using generic/store-brand items, etc. It's almost impossible to try to live healthy without breaking the bank and Americans wonder why our health care system is a complete mess.

My wife and I have 3 kids and we spend about 400.00 each month. Which is actually pretty low. We don't buy any processd foods, cereal, hamburger helper, frozen entrees, etc..

As a Chef and living in the Central Valley of california it's much cheaper to buy all fresh ingredients and cook from scratch. I know in most areras it's cheaper to buy frozen produce, however here it's WAY cheaper to buy produce fresh.

(Side note) I was up in northern Washington last year and went grocery shopping, they had watermelons at 8.99 each. This is for the crenshaw minis! Red Bell peppers 3.99 each. WHAT??!!
Here that watermelon cost me 2.99 and the bell pepper 1.25.

Anyway, we have virtually no waste, my wife and daughter usually take whatever left over foods we have and eat them for lunch the next day, and it's much healthier for everyone.
