    Chiropractor

Anyone ever been to one? I'm going to one today to get my neck and back adjusted and I am so nervous for some reason. My grandfather has known this lady for over 20 years, but I'm still nervous. I think reading different things on the internet have me a little worried. when you're messing with someone's spine/back/neck, all it takes and one mistake.

    Re: Chiropractor

There is a Chiropractor chain over here in the Chicagoland area called Chiro One. They weren't too bad. I plan on going again but they weren't in my insurance network. There were two Chiropractors at this one facility I went to. A big guy about 6'5 and then a little Santa's elf (female) about 5'1. I was nervous at first so I did the little lady for a few weeks. Of course, my body cracked all types of things and I felt a bit of improvement. Then one day, she went away to a wedding so the guy was there all by himself.

I was scared then but I sucked it up. Greatest feeling in the world to get your subluxation fixed. I loved it. It made me realize just how sub par the female was in doing my back. They generally did the neck, spines, and hips. Of course they took an x-ray when we first got there. Those months were the best months for me in regards to energy, sleep, and attitude. I felt sharp as a whistle. You never know how much improvement it does until you don't do it for a while. I say give it a try for a couple of months and see how it goes. I'm definitely planning on going back when we get some of this light debt reduced.

      Re: Chiropractor

After my bball career ended my back was so effed that I was going twice a week to my chiro. Like many "real" doctors will tell you, chiros are good for some immediate relief but they don't solve anything long term and they aren't helping you get healthy. So yeah, if you go a few times a year for your neck or something minor (which is what it sounds like you're doing) then it's all good. Just don't count on it to cure chronic problems or anything along those lines.

I eventually took up yoga, intense core work and combined with no more intense bball and the constant pounding/beating my body took from bball I was able to recover pretty well. I think I've been to the chiro once in the last two years and that was after a rough collision/fall going up for layup. Still do yoga at least twice a week and keep myself in great shape and I no longer have a reason to go to the chiro. And my back is the best it's felt since I was 18.

As for the fear of going, I've been adjusted by three people in my life and they were all very different. One guy wanted to adjust every damn part of my body every time I went. I left his office a few times feeling worse off than when I entered. I went a dozen times or so before moving on. One guy I went to up in college was pretty good, then when I moved home after college I found my regular chiro. So it may take you a few different attempts to find someone who can adjust you well.

My experience is different that that. While in middle/high school, I had issues with migraine headaches. The worst of it was when I ended up in the hospital missing about 6 hours of my life. I had forgotten who members of my family were and everything. Doctors tried medications and such, but what ended up helping me was the chiropractor.

Turns out that my neck was not straight, and when I would exercise, the muscles would tense up and my spine would hit a nerve in the spinal cord. I have not had issues with migraines since I started going to the chiropractor. I still go every so often.

I agree that there are certain chiropractors out there that think they can solve any issue, but in my specific case, it helped me quite a bit.

I'll have intermittent lower back pain (tweaking something, etc) and tried one chiropractor about 2 years ago and wasn't a big fan of her. I went 3 times and didn't really seem to do anything.

2 months ago I decided to give another place a shot and I'm liking it. He adjusts me differently and feels like it does more. He also shows me some exercises and whatnot that can help strengthen my muscles. They also do massage therapy as part of it, so it's nice to get that using only my 15 dollar co-pay through insurance. Every visit's only 15 bucks, which isn't too bad.

I think you just have to find somewhere that you like and works for you. It's not painful or anything like that, so I wouldn't be worried.

You also have to realize that it's not an instant cure, but it can definitely help.

I had a customer tell me I need to go because I get very sore in my right leg and hip. He said that a chiropractor sometimes WILL make you feel worse because some of the adjustments free up nerves that were cut-off from sending pain impulses (not sure if it's true), but I think a good chiropractor would be great. I just could never afford it

              .
That is exactly my point though, you have to keep going to the chiro. They aren't permanently fixing anything. But in cases where it's minor and you only have to go a couple times a year then it's fine.

Have you tried yoga or other stretching exercises to help your problem?

90% of what chiropracters do or claim to be able to do is out and out QUACKERY.

Their legitimate scope would be working as adjuncts to physical therapists, doing basic adjustments. I was interested in becoming a chiropractor early in life and learned what they do and learn. I also know a whole family full of them, 3 generations strong.

They are NOT doctors in my book, and most all legitimate doctors agree, not out of some conspiracy, because what they do has no science behind it, no matter what they tell you.

You've still got these charlatans telling you one leg is shorter than the other and that they can help with all kinds of diseases by adjusting a certain part of you. Kind of like reflexology, etc. I'll rub this part of your foot and it will help your kidney probem, suuuuurrree it will.

                Do your homework.

Chiropractors have there place. I wouldn't let them come anywhere near my neck, but for lower back problems, they do as good a job as anything (albeit for way more $$). Their especially useful in chronic back pain which modern medicine can't 'cure' either.

I actually don't HAVE to go anymore, I just do because I actually enjoy it. Once the initial problem was solved, it has not come back. Typically, I will go when I have back spasms, or if I sleep wrong and my neck bothers me.

Both chiropractors I've gone to have given me stretching exercises to help, and they have.

I think going to a chiro is a personal preference for everyone. My wife went a while back and hated it. She can't relax enough for them to do anything. Whereas I can lay there and let them crack the heck out of me...

Yeah, the key for me was getting my spine back into alignment, then retraining and strengthening the soft tissue to avoid recurring problems. It was painful at first because I waited so long to go to a chiro, but it was well worth it. Its nice to be able to roll out of bed without back pain and stiffness anymore.

                        Re: Chiropractor

I spent a few months with pretty excruciating pain eminating from my lower back down into both legs. An MRI two years ago finally revealed that I had virtually no disc betwen my L4 and L5.

After several rounds of spinal injections of cortizone, I tried a chiro. In addition to the adjstments, I underwent their version of spinal decompression. I did this for 3 months and found it to be a complete waste of time.

I did not mind some of the adjustments he made. I had to tell him to leave the neck alone as I always left the place with a horrible headache after I was adjusted there.

I stopped going a few weeks ago as I was running out of insurance days.

I was a bit disappointed when the receptionist did the hard sell to keep me from leaving. She even called me at home.

At that point, I felt like they were more concerned about my money than my well-being.

All the chiropractors I've ever known are douche bags and know-it-alls. You'd think that they were neurosurgeons or something... just because they deal with the nervous systems and all. <_<
