Don't you think there should have been some sort of courtesy call to this family to inform them something was amiss with this situation? There is NO WAY anyone would intentionally run their bill up to 21k in a month.

There is a difference between taking responsibility for your own actions and having something happen that you had no idea was even possible.

I personally love vzw and even had a great experience once a year or two ago which was somewhat similar to this where after starting a new job which required making a lot personal calls I got notified by them that I wasn't on the best plan based on my usage. They changed the plan I was currently on, and made it retroactive to the start of the billing cycle to make it so I wouldn't have to pay an outlandish bill.

I don't see why something similar in this situation couldn't be worked out.
Well let me remind you that I did say that I feel like VZW should work with him because it's the right thing to do. What I had issue with was the guy's attitude, not what he was asking for or what his defense was.

I had a similar situation with Sprint, I asked before a long trip how many minutes I had to avoid going over my minutes and they told me 200. I was very careful to stay at about 150. When I got my bill it was for like $200 or something and they said the rep was wrong. We agreed to do halfsies and I paid $100 on the bill. I was definitely glad that they did that because technically they could have billed me the full amount as I had no proof the rep told me that.

I think that is what I find most irritating here is the guy acts as if it's the carrier's fault mostly, if not completely, instead of it being mostly his fault, then his son's, and lastly the carriers.

I can agree with that, there is a level of responsibility that needs to be taken.

And admittedly, I had forgotten your main issue was his attitude which I can't argue with here.

But objectively, I think the carrier needs to accept a little responsibility here, and as by evidence in the last sentence of the article, I believe they will, but there is no way they could think a personal account for anyone would be able to afford 21k for one month's phone bill.

You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I am assuming the usage of data cost's VZW the same amount regardless of the plan the customer is on so it really becomes a matter of the customer being accountable, but it seems like there should be some sort of safety net there somewhere to prevent something like this happening.

From my experience he will probably end up paying about $1,000 or less and they will probably work out some payment plan for him so he don't have to pay it back all at once.

I doubt he has to pay even that much. For ATT the unlimited wireless plan is $10 for normal phones and like $30 for the iPhone. So it's not like these companies are losing money when they offer those deals.

They can charge him that, but they will lose that amount when he doesn't renew his plan and all of his friends and family switch too.

That really depends on what he is expecting. If it was me i'd be ecstatic to go from 21k to 1k just because the carrier was nice.
