When chanting at a game goes terribly wrong

The episode during a game between Upper Darby and Lower Merion set off concern among parents, quick action by school officials, and an apology to Lower Merion from Upper Darby's school superintendent.

The chants came from a few teenagers among several hundred spectators in Upper Darby High's gym during the last half of the boys' basketball game.

Two Lower Merion parents in the stands said they had heard spectators chant, "Warm up the ovens."

A third Lower Merion parent said he had heard similar words chanted for about 20 seconds. All three parents asked not to be identified by name.

"There was a pretty spirited back-and-forth between the two sections," said Douglas Young, Lower Merion district spokesman. "At one juncture, there were some really offensive things said by what appeared to be a small group of [Upper Darby] students.

"Young, who was not at the game, said he, too, had been told that students chanted, "Warm up the ovens."

Witnesses said the razzing had been mild and mutual at first - Lower Merion's supporters chanting, "Merry Christmas," and Upper Darby's replying, "Happy Hanukkah." Another Lower Merion chant: "SAT scores!" followed with rhythmic clapping.

Some Lower Merion fans' signs read "Lower Merion vs. Upper Dirty," said Eric Jackson, 17, an Upper Darby senior.

"I got pretty offended when they chanted 'SAT scores,' said Jackson, interviewed last night at a home game against Haverford High. But he added, "It didn't compare with what this side said.

"He said he had heard the "oven" chant and hadn't joined in. "That's wrong to say that."
The two Lower Merion parents who sat near the Upper Darby fans section said they also had heard, "You're so Jewish, get your yarmulke,"and, "We'll write you letters when you're in Auschwitz" - and shouted at the teens to stop.

Yeah, I'm all for some good natured back and forth ribbing, but this is just completely tasteless...would be like a white school playing a black school and chanting about slavery...just horrible.

Didn't this happen in Philly? About what you would expect from their sports fans.

Yeah because antisemitism and racism only happens in and around Philadelphia.

            *smh*

Anyway, Lower Merion has a large Jewish segment and everyone knows it. I live directly on the outside of it. There's a synagogue up the street, alot of the stores going towards City Avenue are owned by a Jewish realtor.

And I've been to Upper Darby millions of times...as a driver. But I always remember years ago my mom telling me to be careful in that area. But she was talking about her time period in the '70s. Upper Darby is pretty diverse now.

I guess some elements of old still exist. Or these were just a group of stupid, f'n idiots.

Actually this has happened several times during the high school games in Indiana. When ever Crown Point High School, a majority white town and school plays any school with a lot of black players or hispanic players they always chant racial stuff.

Heck I even remember during a Notre Dame game, when Notre Dame was getting crushed, some of the fans were chanting we need more N - word players on our team for we can win.

But like the other guy said, it will always be some bad apples no matter what game or state you are in.

Re: When chanting at a game goes terribly wrong

Just to clear this up; Upper Darby and Lower Merion are Philadelphia SUBURBS. It is not the city of Philadelphia. For those familiar with New York; that would be like saying a high school game in the Hamptons was in New York City. District 12 (the PIAA classification for the Philadelphia Public and Catholic Leagues) would not have stood for this and games are fairly tame. I played in the Public League and still attend quite a few games when I can.

Wow, that is absolutely awful and tasteless behavior. It seems alot of people can't watch or attend a sporting event anymore without turning into idiots.

Don't worry, I didn't get it either until I got to the Auschwitz comment. Very insensitive and tasteless.
