    The Official CraigsList Scam Thread

Let me start this off with one of the biggest items: my house! I'm driving to work about a week and a half ago and a number appears in a call on my cell that I don't recognize. A lady asks me if my name is what it is, and I hesitantly reply, as I've listed a couple of things on CL, but pretty sure I didn't put my name. Turns out she found out someone grabbed my listing off owners.com I had there a few years ago and copied the essential info. and put it in a CL listing for rent (cheaply too, I might add). She said she was scammed the same way a little while ago. I checked it out later in the day and sure enough there was my listing with my name and cell phone number. However, the pix were of some other place. I emailed "me" through another email addy that doesn't have my name in it and got the prototypical scammers e-mail, complete with West Africa and "we are missionaries" references! Here's part of the email response:

Presently, We are here in west Africa doing the Lord's duty for humanity, for through our direct service to mankind, the blessings and promises of God will manifest today. The house vital informative documents and the entrance keys to the house are with me, for we try to look for dependable agent to handle the rent but could not find due to the limited time we had before leaving the United States. Mostly we do not want our property to be given to any sort of person to avoid damages and troubles. I and my wife came over to West Africa for a missionary work you can go over or drive by to see the house ok, but you can only view from outside for now hope you understand , so I hope you will promise us to take very good care of the house. So get back to me on how you could take care of our house or perhaps the experience and your persent living condition.

Isn't that special. Surprisingly, no inquiry about SS# or bank #. I thought no big deal, but actually had a couple of calls and my neighbors told me some people came by to see the place and I guess actually replied to this guy's initial e-mail and was ready to send him the $500 he was asking for? I personally have yet to respond to him. I want to call him out, but at the same time, I don't want him having this other e-mail addy.

Wow. You need to flag that immediately. If it comes up again I would call the police.

But who am I going to send them after? Some guy in West Africa, or wherever? I'm sure it's not traceable. People just need to be careful not to send large checks off to people they don't know.

Relatedly, my brother gave out his CC# to some co. claiming to be Google related for in-home work. Next thing you know, he's charged $100 for a training package that he never received.

sounds like a $100 training package on common sense.

He's older and not very internet saavy, plus I think that some CC holders think they're protected no matter what. Maybe his CC co. does honor some type of protection program. I know mine does through USAA.

I can't believe the number of people that fall for this crap. I mean seriously. I have even seen a post or two on here asking if some email they got from Nigeria was legit. If ANYONE EVER asks you to send money to them, other than someone you know personally, please don't do it. Its a SCAM!

^ Speaking of Nigerians. I am sick and tired of guys with African names trying to offer me deals and all sorts of stuff on my email. Do any of you guys get these emails too?
