With regard to aliens, if other life must stay true to our conventions and harbor water, there are millions of planets out there that probably have or once had water, so in my opinion this makes a good argument for the possibility extraterrestrial life existing somewhere.
I also laugh when people say that they believe in aliens but as mushrooms or microscopic organisms, nothing as intelligent as humans. With regard to intelligence, chances are you are always in the middle of something. If aliens exist, I don't think planet earth holds the dumbest nor the smartest organisms in the universe. Statistically, it is much more likely you are in the middle of something than at a polar extreme.
IMO saying no other life exists feels as wrong as saying the world is flat. I think there are millions if not billions of things out there so far away from our solar system that we don't even know about. We live with the myopic mindset that since we haven't found anything near or around our solar system, this raises doubt for the entire universe. Just because you can't reach out and hug your mother doesn't mean she isn't downstairs doing the laundry.
