Man I got a worse deal than you. To top it off I am stuck on a 2 year contract. If I cancel that is $200 out my pocket.

I find it funny that you say 1000Pounds is cheap for a one year's travel card -- how expensive are cars and insurance down there for that to be considered cheap? lol

(fyi to do £ is alt key + 156 in sequence to get the pound symbol, hold alt down and hit 156 on the num pad... lol)

£1000 is $1700 roughly... you could probably find a car cheaper... but then you would be subject to getting petrol (gas) at £1.10 a liter which equivalents out to roughly $1.85 a liter and at roughly 4 liters a gallon thats...... yep just about $8 a gallon. So there is no need to get into insurance and such... you can really take the trains to the major cities out here for the cheap... and then if really needed you could rent a car.

I paid £2195 for my car.. and I get gas on base so its $4 a gallon... but seriously £1000 will probably last you more than a year... I put £200 on my oyster card when I bought it two years ago and I go to London 1 time a month (generally) and I haven't added any money to it at all.

I was looking at mobile phone companies, and came across high scpeed internet. I think it was O2 that offered unlimited internet at like 20MBPS for like 17 pounds -- is that true? That is REALLY cheap.

Internet is super cheap... just make sure you go with unlimited d/l. In London you will actually see those speeds too... out in the farm area like me I get around 5mps and 500k up for £15, even though my deal is 20mps and 1mps up... I am unfortunate to be a little farther from the server than you will be.

Are phone calculations similar to Aus in that, if you have, let's say, 100minutes and 500SMS you only use up mins and SMS for outgoing or if someone calls you, you still get minutes deducted?

yep... illegal to do otherwise... should be this way in the states. I have a pay as you go phone and I usually put £15 on it every 3 months or so.

I am just clearing things up with the agency Im working with but Im bound to have some questions soon enough. Biggest worry for me is getting an apartment as close to the school as possible, so I can cut down on the price of travel -- seems insane!

See if they will pay for the oyster card... a lot of businesses will do it. Its there way of saying... well your car didn't break down... I took the tube this morning.

Internet throughout europe is way cheaper and faster then anything in north america. Mainly because of the cultural difference. In north america, companies view broadband internet as something to make the hugest profit off of. Where as in europe, companies view it as something that everybody needs and will benefit the nation as a whole. Big difference in way of thinking.

What he said... internet is available for free pretty much throughout London with wireless. But definitely get your own for your flat.

1000 pounds for a years travel card seems cheap to me. I spend over $2000 a year in just gas for my car. When you add in insurance, repairs etc... it is probably around $4000 a year for my car and that doesn't include the car payment. Besides, I don't think I would want to deal with driving in London traffic (on the wrong side of the road mind you) or trying to find parking.

Driving on the "wrong" side actually is pretty easy after the first few days... and driving over here is tons safer than in the states... much harder to get a license and then drivers are much nicer on the roads as well. Parking.... don't get me started... England is the worst for parking anywhere much less London. You will see cars on the side of the road... b/c most businesses can't afford the land to make parking lots for their stores... most villages or towns have a designated parking lot for the whole area.. so London is no different... I have never seen in two years now a parking lot in London nor a parking garage.. I have heard they are underground but I seriously doubt there is many of them around.

You got more parking in London then you have in NY. Plus nobody traffic is worse then NY, LOL,

I doubt that... traffic may be worse in NY but parking here is 100x worse... trust me.

Yeah man in Europe they getting like 50Mbps a download on average. Over here in America 50Mbps is a luxory.

50 is pushing it... but 20 is probably the norm in the UK... higher on the mainland of Europe no doubt... It sucks that the states is all about the money... having great internet should be for everyone to enjoy.

Forgot to add... mobile phones... good website (one of the big stores that sell phones over here cheap with plans and all) www.carphonewarehouse.com they have tons of stores everywhere as well

they are the main ones... for London anyone of them have great signal and it should just come down to the plans... and the cost of the phone itself... also don't forget about the option of pay as you go.

I have been to London a few times, usually sightseeing or for a big soccer match.
If you are used to the big city enviroment then you really shouldn't have any major problems, apart from the weather.
I would advise that you use public transport as such things as petrol and congestion charges are ridiculously expensive here in the U.K.
And one other thing, if you are going to go to a market then learn cockney slang first. Otherwise you will come out of the experience very confused.

haha cockney... i still havent got a hang of it yet... but overall in a market tell them what ya want and pay for it... not that bad... but there are some guys out there that will make you scratch your head at what they just said though.
