Need some advice...

...on buying a suit! I'm 21 years of age and have never owned a suit before. I've never really had reason to have one, nor could I afford one. But now is that time with interviews coming up.

I'm very ignorant when it comes to suits. I don't know much about the sizing, brand names, styles, etc. All I know is I don't have a whole bunch of loot to spend on suits and would like to look decent at a reasonable price.

Men's warehouse usually has a sale where you can get 2 suits for like $200. They also have nicer stuff if you want to spend more.

Just a couple things:
1. If you only have 1, make it a dark suit (navy or charcoal). These can be worn to any event. Lighter suits can too, but take considerably more effort.

2. Try on a bunch, and of different brands. Different types of suits can fit very differently.

3. Don't cheap out to badly. People can tell if you have a $1000 dollar suit, and people can tell if you have a $100 suit. The difference between a $300 and $600 are more subtle.

4. Don't buy a suit full price. Department stores have sales on suits all the time. Just takes some effort.

5. Listen to the salesperson, but don't take their advice as gospel. It's important to wear a suit you feel comfortable in, and not a suit that someone else thinks you're suppose to look good in.

S&K is where I usually get mine from. Got 2 dark colored suits for like $250. Try on several...most places will tailor them as well (for free). That will take 2-3 days to do so don't wait til the day before to get it/them.

That's the biggest thing. Places like JOSEPH A BANK (the commercial's emphasis, not mine) and Mens Warehouse always have crazy sales. That's not an exaggeration; they literally always have huge discounts, but Jos A Bank especially is able to have half price and buy two get 17 free because they're normally way overpriced.

Personally I like Nordstrom's summer sale, but it is a ways off and might be more money than you have.

That's an exaggeration (obviously), but at least once every two weeks they'll have a buy 1 get 2 free (or an equivalent like buy 2 at half off get one free).

It's pretty decent if you don't have anything else to wear, but their regular prices are horrible.

Yeah, I'd probably just go to Men's Warehouse, see what kind of deals they have, and let one of the associates measure you up and get everything all set. This is what I did when I was a senior in high school and needed one for college interviews and senior pics and stuff.

Which brings me to my special advice: never wash the pants on your own. I got my suit pants mixed up with my slacks and washed them a few times. They're floods now.

Regardless of where you go, expect to pay an extra $25-$40 for alterations. It may seem costly, but there is nothing like a well tailored suit that fits you...."You're going to like the way you look...I guarantee it."

As others have said, hit up a Men's Wearhouse and tell them it's your first suit and you need something that's basically an all-purpose suit and they'll take care of you. As Laffer said, you want something dark as you want to be able to wear it to a wedding, a job interview,etc.

And also, I doubt Mens wearhouse is going to "make me like the way I look" unless they also employ personal trainers who are miracle workers and on-site plastic surgeons, LOL
