    Virus..Please help

I am running Windows 7 and have been for about a month now.

Right now I am getting this message randomly throughout the day:
"Application cannot be executed. The file wuauclt.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

I have Norton Antivirus as well as SpySweeper. I am running spysweeper currently, but when I try to run Norton I always get this message.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: I am actually getting a bunch of different ones now..like "dllhost" and "ssu.exe"

EDIT: A random adult website just popped up on IE

    Please help!

EDIT: Norton antivirus is running right now. And I keep getting asked to purchase Spyware.

Does it keep turning off your Norton? And setting off your Windows security alerts? I had the same virus and had to reformat my PC to finally get rid of it. There's a free tool to try and it get rid of it, but it didn't work on mine. What stinks is that it isn't really a virus, per se. It is an annoyance and a hoax program trying to get you to buy a program that doesn't exist. But it doesn't eat data, it just screws up a few of your reg keys. There are a few of these running around. Mine was "Windows PC Defender," I clicked on the little popup because I though it was a real Windows alert. Good news is that you can get your data off before you reformat. I panicked and got frustrated and ended up losing a whole lot of data. Fixed someone else's computer last week that had it and was able to back up everything before I had to reformat. Good luck... Brian

I would just keep Norton running for right now to see if it turns anything up. Also, in my experience, some of the stuff can send fake notifications that look just like a windows notification, so I would check the validity of any notifications you get. (Spelling errors, multiple exclamation points, etc.)

EDIT: Also, some of these things are really tough to get rid of. Make sure you google it and get all the info you can, because my money is on you are gonna have to do some of it manually, as this program is likely designed to avoid anti-virus programs, and will still be there even when you think it's gone.

It did keep turning off my Norton but I ran it as a "Admin" and I am running it right now.

So far it has found and cleaned up 3 viruses.

Right now I keep getting messages that tell me a certain file isn't being executed. Sometimes when I cancel it out I get directed to a adult website, or it shows me my antivirus protection.

Every once and awhile I am getting a "Antivirus Software alert" that is telling me my computer is being attacked. If I select that I want to block this attack I get directed to their product page.

Yep, mine had some spelling errors after I went back and looked at it. Of course by then, the damage was done. I tried this:http://www.prlog.org/10391094-window...tructions.html , but it didn't help. Had to reformat and lost about 5gb of my Hauppage gaming footage. I was not happy.

I think after Norton Antivirus is done running I am going to take it to the technology help desk here at school.

This is the last thing I need at school

                That sucks.

Just had one hit my older cpu yesterday, actually. Fierce, it changed my desktop, set internet bookmarks to all kinds of nasty sites, constant system notifications (fake, of course), etc. Just when I was starting to mop up, something internal blew, and that was that. Not even worth fixing anymore, it's garbage now.

Here's where I got the free tool, but it didn't work: http://malwarebytes.org

Here's instructions on how to try and remove it manually. Caution you can totally kill the PC's OS if you mess up the reg keys.

To reiterate, back up your data!

In the unlikely chance you mess something up, you will want everything backed up. Good luck!

I hate playing with REG keys. Every time I have messed up something when I deleted keys. That's one area I fear to tread...

Don't get me wrong, I hate it too.

But with a good set of instructions from a reliable source you should be fine.
