    My dog almost died Friday...

Thursday night I went to bed and I could see that Roxy hadn't really eaten her food(she usually scoffs her entire bowl at once), but thought nothing of it. I woke up 7 hours later and went into the living room to say good morning to her. I was met with what looked like a battlefield. Vomit stains all over the place. My carpet, my door, my walls, my couch... Everywhere. There she was laying in a ball on the couch shaking.

I coaxed her from her spot so I could get a good look at her... She appeared fine. Looked in the vomit and could see pieces of black material(I wear black work socks). Immediately ran into my computer/guitar room, as that's where I tend to disrobe. Sure enough, I had forgotten to grab my socks when I went to bed. Both socks had the heels and toes chewed out.

I was debating waiting it out for the day(letting her try and pass it) or going to the vet when she attempted to eat a little bit. Within ten minutes she sprayed it all out. That was all it took, I rushed her to the vet. Vet took the xrays and had a radiologist take a look at them. Sure enough, a blockage where the stomach meets the small intestines.

Sooooooo, off to the emergency vet I go.

Get there, they immediately take her in for their own x-rays to see if things have moved and whatnot. In the meantime, they tell me the surgery costs $2800, which I obviously don't have. So they tell me to apply for their credit card with a $3k limit.

I apply, and I promptly get denied(24 with NO credit history). I knew I would be). At that point, I broke down crying in the lobby. Here's my baby, and I can't afford to fix her, due to my own stupidity. My options are, take her home and watch her die slowly over the course of 3-4 days in excruciating pain, or pay to have her put to sleep and end the suffering.

Doctor comes back out and tells me that I have one other option; to let a non-board certified surgeon do the surgery as an emergency visit. It would cost about $800, due to the state giving kickbacks because students assist on those surgeries. So I call up some people and gather the money.

Long story short; that was one expensive *** sock. Total damage to my wallet? $2100. The visits, tests, overnight care, surgery, blah blah blah... Total of ~$2100.

She's home, and doing okay for now. In a ton of pain. In fact, if she goes more than 6 hours without pain meds she starts to go into shock. Her color fades, she starts shaking, and starts to foam at about 8.5 hours. I figured that out by accident(her scrip was for every 8 hours... Missed it by half an hour and she degraded fast). So now they tell me to give it every 6 as a precaution.

I'm not sure if pictures are allowed in this forum or not, so I won't post any as of yet. If a mod would kindly respond to this thread saying yay or nay on pictures, I would appreciate it.

I'd like to post: her, the xray, her incision, and she and I after the ordeal. All facebook hosted pictures, so they aren't big at all.

Pictures are okay. If you have any you feel might be graphic to some, put them in a spoiler tag. Thanks.

Also, great that you were able to work out a surgery man. Hopefully she feels better soon. My GSD had root canal surgery and I remember the panic mode I was in and that is no where near what you went through. Hopefully all goes well soon.

Yes she is, and she really don't. The only thing she goes after is worn socks. And even then, she usually just shreds it. This time she literally ate the heels and toes of two socks. I'm really good about keeping them up too.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope she gets well soon. My parents have a 6mo. old English Springer spaniel that gets into everything. Mainly just rips things to shreds...hoping he never tries to eat something he's not supposed to.

Wow, glad you were able to get her the surgery. That's the danger of having pets, they tend to get into and eat things. I have a chocolate lab who loves to steal socks (and gloves), but she's a good dog and doesn't chew anything. She just tries to get someone to chase her and if noone chases her she either abandons the sock/glove or lays down with it and waits for someone to spot her.

Glad she is ok bro. I went through the same thing with my buddy Charlie. It was the netting around a roast that he ate. I was an absolute wreck. I still worry about him getting into stuff but he does better with that now.

And beautiful dog by the way.

Re: My dog almost died Friday...

Damn man. Hopefully she recovers fast and all is well. Good thing you didn't have to put her to sleep.

When I was 15 my parents had to put one of our dogs asleep because of kidney stones. They couldn't pay for the surgery at the time and the doctor said even with the surgery, the kidney stones were likely to keep coming back. So we were forced to put her to sleep. She was a blue tick beagle. Weird name I know, but a purely amazing dog. Loved her to death. Still miss her to this day and it's been almost 6 years now.

Now my only dog is a Basset Hound. We've had her ever since she was born. She's 12 years old now. Getting old, but we took her to the vet like 2 weeks ago and they took a blood test on her. The results came back perfect. The vet said she's never seen a 12 year old Basset Hounds blood test come back perfect. Awesome news. She doesn't really act old either, still pretty active and acts the same way she has her whole life.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail this thread on my dogs. Haha. Good luck with Roxy and hopefully all goes well.

Re: My dog almost died Friday...

One time my dog swallow a cat toy. We took him to the vet and were able to catch it before it was digested. It would have been 2000 for the operation. I was newly married and there was no way we could have afford that. So I told my wife we are going to have to put it to sleep if they can't get it out by having it vomit. Lucky for us the Dr. came back and said we must have prayed real hard they got it in time. Scary day! We had to get rid of the dog 5 years later we when had our first son. The dog didn't take to the baby too well. Chihuahua are like that they say. We found a good home for it and I have not see that dog in 8 years now.

One of our dog's name is Roxy too.

Sad to hear. We have an older dog named Ruby, she's been through the surgery thing a few times. It's tough. Lots of money, lots of time and effort during the recovery, it isn't fun. Glad to hear she's on the road to recovery, though. Wish you all the luck in the world with it.
