    My dog and the mirror

LOL, my dog Brutus will sit in front of the floor length mirror I have and just look at himself. He'll do this for like a half hour or so. He doesn't bark or do anything, just looks at his reflection. Sometimes I imagine him saying to himself "Hello me, how is me doing today?" or something to that effect. Anyone else's pets infatuated with themselves when they look in the mirror like this?

Never had a dog that realized the reflection. In fact, no dog I or my mother has ever owned has even bothered with the reflection to bark at it. They just lose interest and go do other dog things.

LOL. My dog doesn't do anything like that though I could write a book about all the goofy things she does or has done. Her main thing is that she is completely and utterly obsessed with chasing the flashlight or laser pointer to the point that she will sit and stare at any place she has seen someone get the flashlight/laser pointer from. What's even funnier is that if she doesn't have a toy in her mouth she'll go really nuts running after it and even trying to take it from whoever is holding it but then she always runs and gets a toy after which she just walks around not necessarily even following the light. She won't let you take the toy from her though.

Yeah I've read dogs can't see reflections but I don't buy it, he is looking at himself. Of course "they" (as in scientists) also say dogs can differentiate between a knock on the door on TV and a real knock on your door but every dog I've ever had, including my current one, will occasionally bark and go nuts when someone knocks on the door on my tv. Of course I do have 5.1 surround sound but still..

Speaking of which, I was watching a movie last week in my 7.1 surround sound den and there was a doorbell on the movie and my dog started barking, but get this...even *I* was fooled, I actually started walking up the stairs before I realized it was on the movie I was watching. I think that's the first time I've ever been fooled in that fashion.

Another goofy thing my chocolate lab does. As for seeing reflections, when I lived at my moms house I had a waterbed that had a mirror in the headboard and one morning our black lab (who now lives with my sister) jumped on my bed, apparently saw his reflection in that mirror, and started growling at it.

I could tell you so many stories about the animals my family owns or has owned. We always seem to get the weird and/or stupd ones and even had a suicidal hamster. We came home from the sore one night to find it had wedged itself under its wheel and asphyxiated.

This is absolute comedy. Having a bad day, if you have a dog or cat, this will make you forget all about it

My mom has held our guinea pig up to the bathroom mirror before. She just kind of leans forward and tries to sniff it out as if it's another guinea pig, but I think she soon realizes it's herself and stops doing anything afterward.

Sounds like your dog has some orientation issues to deal with.

Maybe my dog is simply like Robert Deniro in Taxi Driver?? Are you talkin' to me???

If I come home and find him with a mohawk and holding his paw over the stove I will have to get some dog therapy for him I guess!

When my dog was a puppy she'd look at her reflection and bark. LOL. Doesn't do it anymore though.

funny, he looked right at his reflection. I put him closer and he didn't stare blankly at it, he "sniffed" his reflection. Scientist are dumb lol

Yeah, I agree, sometimes they are smart technically but don't use common sense. This show I watched had interviews with a bunch of them saying dogs only see lines, vectors, etc and that is why their vision could not work for a mirror. They said they just see nothing basically. Well bullocks to that!

My dog recognizes the jingle from a local car dealership commercial and immediately starts barking at the TV whenever the commercial starts. At the end there is a dog barking in the commercial which is why they don't like it.

Also if I watch The Simpsons they won't be bothered by the people in it, but if they see the cartoon dog in the show they start barking.
