What does your V.I.T.H. sound like?

V.I.T.H. = "voice in the head"

Silly question, I know. But it's just funny to think about... mine doesn't necessarily sound like my own voice. At least, not the voice that I hear when I watch footage of me talking (I always think I sound weird on tapes as do other people with their voices, but that's just what we really sound like). As I type this out, my V.I.T.H. speaks out every word that I'm typing, and if I try and speak when I type, I know that they're two different voices haha.

Sometimes when reading stories, I give people "higher" and "lower" voices unless I can get an actual description of what they sound like, then I try and match that. When reading the message board, I give most people here their own "voice" that pertains either to how they type or how I think of them as when I see their avatar or something.

I can't really think about a certain celebrity my V.I.T.H. might sound like, but if I come up with one I'll let you know. Maybe a little bit like Will Patton but without the accent haha.

    Anyway, weird thread... just discuss.

What I meant actually was the voice that you have when you think of things. Like remember The Wonder Years? Kevin Arnold had some grown up dude as his V.I.T.H.

      Hope that makes sense.

This is arguably the oddest thread I've ever seen.

Mine sounds like my own voice. Don't know how in the world someone could have a different voice speaking to you in your head. How do you manage that?

I'm not saying it sounds far different than how I sound, but it probably just doesn't keep up with the current me or something. Even when I open my own mouth I'm surprised how "deep" I've gotten in a way. I also don't recall my V.I.T.H. growing up with me, either. I think it's just pretty much been the same voice.

Probably what happened is that I started reading a series of books or some book over and over again, where the narrator had something distinct about him that I would match it with said narrator. After that, it probably stuck with me.

Lol after readin your post I recorded myself talking and I was shocked at what I heard. My V.I.T.H. sounds nothing like my actual voice imo.

This is something I didn't know until I actually heard myself speak to the recorder. When I'm talking and I hear my voice everything sounds clear and understandable.

But on the recording I either slurred words or my accent made the words harder to understand. I had to rewind one sentence like 4x because I couldn't understand myself when I said excited.

Lol I've read about this stuff and I know that your inner voice is different then the one everyone else hears but its weird to actually hear it for myself. I actually have more of a drawl in my voice then I thought I did.

My voice is deeper then I thought it was too and I speak in a softer tone then I thought I did. I feel like I have to improve my voice now lol never thought I would have to do that.

Re: What does your V.I.T.H. sound like?

Everyone keeps remarking how their voice sounds different when they hear it on a recording than when they are actually talking and there is a good reason for that. When you talk, you not only hear the sound of your voice that has carried through the air and been picked up throug the out ear, but also the sound (or more precisely the vibrations created by the movement of your vocal cords) travel through the bones of your jaw and skull (called bone conduction) and these vibrations can be picked up by the hair cells within the cochlea and converted to electrical signals which are transmitted to the brain. Whereas when listeing to a recording, you are only picking up sound waves through your ears without any of the internal bone conduction.

Yeah, yeah, go ahead and say it, I'm a nerd.

I'm lost now. Are we talking about how our voice sounds to other people, or how it sounds over the phone or on a recording, etc. Or how it sounds in our head? Like when we're thinking or something..

Don't think the OP worded it very well as we're getting different responses from people as to what the OP is talking about.

But what about when you were younger? What about when you read my post, especially if it showed anger (maybe was all capitalized)? Dialogue from a female character in a novel? A quote from Brad Pitt in an interview? That's kind of what I wanted to ask as well lol.

Re: What does your V.I.T.H. sound like?

Weird thread, but I would have guessed it'd be you, Blzer, to come up with it.

My inside voice sounds like myself. But, I cant' say for sure because I'm testing it now and I could just be thinking to myself in the voice I want to hear in my thoughts.

Everyone here does have a different voice. I do the same when reading a book. I have the same narrator for every story, but every character has their own, unique voice. I will even go back and reread a line from a book if I confused who said it. Same for this board and any other board. Reading a line of dialogue in the voice designated to the speaker acts as a way for me to remember who actually said it.

So, when I see threads like this, I will read the OP in a particular way and that goes hand-in-hand with why I would mostly guess it was you writing the opening post. You ask these kind of questions and therefore you have a voice associated with how I'd expect you to speak when asking those questions.

One unusual (or maybe it's not that unusual) is that no one has an annoying voice. In a book I recently read, a primary character to the story was described as having a squeeky, high-pitched voice. I had a rough time thinking that voice when reading their dialogue.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
