My mom is on oxygen and is still smoking - while wearing her oxygen tubes!

On New Years Eve my mom was unable to breath and nearly died. She was rushed to the emergency room by ambulance and they stabilized her. After 40 years of a nearly 2-pack a day habit and avoiding doctors like the plague, she finally had to learn that she had COPD, or a disease of the lungs which causes shortness of breath due to lung tissue damage. Apparently your lungs just turn rock hard and become mostly useless. She also had pneumonia. Probably from smoking outside (my grandparents forbid smoking in their house and she is living with them). They also determined she was severely diabetic and immediately had to be started on an insulin program.

About 10 days later she was released from the hospital with insulin, needles and a home oxygen kit with several tanks. She was told she needed to watch her sugar, be on a strict healthy diet and cease smoking. She had gone without smoking for 10 days and she told me she had no desire to smoke. I talked to my nephew shortly after she got home and he informed me she was eating cookies and really hadn't changed her diet. At least she wasn't smoking though.

Until I found out she was. I called home last week and spoke to her and surprisingly, without me even asking, she admitted she was smoking again. She told me she was only smoking about 4 cigarettes a day though. I asked her if she was taking her oxygen off when she did and she said "of course". Well last night I talk to my nephew and he says Grandma Judi smokes like she used to. I said, well she doesn't use the oxygen when she's smoking does she? And he says "Yeah and her oxygen tubes that go into her nose are all brown". I was shocked! Not only that she would be so stupid but that she would smoke around my 11 year old nephew and endanger him.

Honestly I can't fathom this behavior. Is smoking and eating poorly really that addictive? I love my beer but if I was told I would die due to liver failure if I drank much more I'd quit in a second. Is this suicidal behavior? My grandmother said a while back my mom is suffering from depression. I have asked her to get prescriptions for anti-smoking help and she says she's applied and is waiting. But from what I understand if you go 10 days without smoking you're physically off nicotine, it's just a psychological addiction at that point.

I'm going to visit her tomorrow and I'm a little afraid to stay there now to be honest. I'm worried that she will try to sneak a cigarette in while i'm asleep and I could get blown up or whatever.

I'd like to hear from smokers, former and current, as to their thoughts on this issue. I'm just stunned about all of these latest developments. How could it have come to this??

Smoking is very addicting, but there is good news. There are a few drugs that help people with stopping smoking. I would Consult a doctor.

Can anything be done about her obvious psychological addiction though? I think that's much more the issue than her nicotine addiction. A 40 year habit is obviously difficult to break.

I helped my wife quit with a few simple rules and she has been smoke free for nearly 9 years now.

Rule 1, a cigarette craving last about 5 minutes, so if she has one find something to do for those 5 minutes. At first if you want a cigarette after the 5 minutes, have it. Gradually you move to Rule 2. Rule 2, after the craving if you want one have a Blowpop to satisfy the oral fixation. By using this process my wife became cigarette free in about 3-4 weeks.

I'm glad you did too snepp, no one deserves to go through what happens when COPD is diagnosed. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. I feel no guilt though about it, nor should anyone in my family. For probably the last 20 years we've ALL done everything within our ability to get her to quit. My grandparents even offered to pay her house taxes every year and buy her a new car and she wouldn't quit.

I've begged her, threatened her, tried humiliating her, scolded her, begged her some more and even, as my grandparents did, offered to bribe her. I've sent her article after article about the consequences and we've even had interventions. Her response to me has always been I just want her to quit because I don't like the "smell of the cigarettes" which is true, but hardly the reason I wanted her to quit. My point to her was I can go wash my clothes and take a shower to fix myself but she can't fix the issues it brings her that easy.

I honestly curse my stepfather for this. My mom quit smoking before she married him and was smoke-free for about 6 months. When they married he convinced her to start again so he'd have someone to smoke with. But who knows, maybe she'd have started again without his convincing too...

Wow Odogg, I'm sorry to hear your mom is in such bad shape. Someone really needs to set her straight about the dangers of smoking while using oxygen and get her to quit. Other than that, I really don't know what to say other than she needs some help. 3 of my 4 grandparents smoked but all 3 were able to quit pretty much cold turkey after receiving serious medical diagnoses when in their 60's.

That's weird you say that BurghFan because my mom is 59 and as I said, she just received a very serious diagnosis. I always used to think when that day came she'd really wake up but apparently not!

Honestly, after smoking 2 packs a day for 40 years, she is lucky to only have COPD.

I have been smoking for about 7 years now. About a pack to a pack and half a day. While I am fully aware of the issues smoking can cause. I still do it. They say nicotine is the most addictive drug in the world. I think about quiting sometimes but to be honest im just not ready to quit.

You know I have been there. I used to try and quit all the time I guess for the sake of trying. Deep down I knew I wouldnt. A year ago, I guess I was ready cause I stopped and haven't smoked in 14 months. I dont care to smoke and I get the craving once in a while but its gone before It even bothers me.

Odgogg, to answer your question, I dont think its "suicidal behavior" I think its a difference of opinion.

Your mom convinced herself that it was OK to do what she is doing. Little by little, she got all of the justification she needed from herself to continue smoking and not eating right.

Like someone else mentioned, after 40+ years of smoking and not eating right, there isnt many things, if anything at all, that will make someone just stop smoking and eat right over night. This included personal health issues no matter how severe. From your standpoint, and from many of our standpoints, we are like wtf, if that was me, I would throw out the junkfood and stop smoking on the spot. It doesn't work that way, and there needs to be steps taken to quit after this long.

Your mom is quite possibly looking at this like a prison sentence. Shes getting older and knows that hey" once I stop smoking, its for good" like this eating right, not smoking, taking insulin and being on oxygen is what she gets to look forward to for the rest of her life. Think about if doctors said your private part was gang green and you couldn't be with woman ever again. You would go home and for sure try to get your last licks in LOL.

Either way man, good luck with this and if I were you I would def. take an active role in helping her as you are obviously worried about her, I think you should really try to put yourself in her shoes and try to feel how she is feeling. That will prob help you, help her.

Re: My mom is on oxygen and is still smoking - while wearing her oxygen tubes!

I do smoke. But I've only been smoking for about a year. I first tried a cigarette because my life was beginning to get very stressful. My friend smoked and one night I asked for a cigarette. You wouldn't believe the 'buzz' I got from the cigarette. It just kind of helped relieve some of my stress I guess. That's how I started smoking. I know, horrible idea to start and there are thousand better ways to go about relieving stress than cigarette smoking. I also don't smoke 2 packs a day. Honestly, i can't even imagine smoking that many every single day. The most I've ever smoked in one day was 1 pack, and that was on a day where I was partying at a friends house and we stayed up all night. On a daily basis, I smoke maybe 8-10 cigarettes.

I have tried to quit twice now. But honestly, I really didn't try. I told myself I was going to quit and ended up buying another pack like 2 hours later. I've thought about quitting, because of the money, but as someone else said, I'm really just not ready. It was a dumb idea to start smoking in the 1st place, but I've promised myself I am going to quit sooner or later, when I'm ready. It's a disgusting habit and I don't feel like killing myself either.

So regarding your mother, I can't tell you exactly how hard it is to quit smoking. I'd imagine it's very hard, ESPECIALLY for someone who's been smoking 2 packs a day for 40 years. So I'm not really sure what advice I can offer. If you've tried all of those things and they still don't work, then I don't know. I'm sorry. I guess continue to beg her. Have another intervention with a lot of family members. Do something. It's going to be hard, but I hope that she'll eventually break through and understand what she is very dangerous and life threatening.

wow, that's some great insight renegade and I think you're right. I think it's a failure to accept a long term picture. I do recall one time she said to me "what difference does it make, i don't have any insurance anyways so I'm screwed". I took that to be suicidal but I think you're right, I think it's more like she just figures "one more day". She's lived her life like that in just about every regard.

For example, when the water was due to be shut off for lack of payment on Friday for example if my grandma would ask her on that Tuesday what she was going to do about it she'd say "oh I dunno, i'll figure out something, it's not due to be shut off until Friday..." whereas myself I'd be like "HOLY CRAP THE WATERS DUE TO BE SHUT OFF IN 36 HOURS".

I just find it very difficult to get into her head. I don't think there is much I can do to help her but I figure I will keep trying to think about how to do so until she's dead. At least then I can live with a clear conscience I did my best and didn't just write her off.

You should take away her oxygen. That's incredibly dangerous. Gasping and wheezing is better than lighting herself or her house on fire.

As for getting her to quit- she has to be ready. Nothing you say or do will change her mind until she starts contemplating quiting. Make it clear to her that you are always willing to discuss quiting with her. Occasionally you can bring it up, in a non-confrontational way (ie "Hey ma, have you thought about quiting smoking lately?"), and if she doesn't want to talk about it, you are just fighting a losing battle. If she does begin to open up a dialogue, that's when real progress can be made.
