    Bulging Disk

    Hey guys,

Just got some MRI results back from the doctor. I have a bulging disk around the c6 vertebrae in my neck and it could be indicative of degenerative joint disease. I don't have any pain or anything like that but I'm sort of wondering whether I should go ahead and have surgery before things get any worse. Have any of you guys ever had something like this, and can you share your experience.

FYI- I'm an avid weightlifter and I'm thinking I might have acquired it during my years lifting.

    Re: Bulging Disk

Wow. Seems like a lot of us OSers are having musculoskeletal issues. (You with the bulging disc, me with the torn tendon.....)

I would spend some time doing research on this and weighing the risk/benefits of surgery. These days, surgery generally involves very small incisions and quick recovery time. If you leave the disc bulging and continue with an active lifestyle, you could always run the risc of the disc bursting causing insane amounts of discomfort. (A poker buddy of mine had a lower back disc burst on him and it laid him out flat for weeks).

So if you are in healthy shape, and you fully understand the process, I would suggest going for the surgery.

In my case (torn soleus tendon) I am avoiding surgery unless fully needed since I can still get by without having the surgery and my lifestyle doesn't generally involve heavy movement with my right leg. But had this been a neck injury, I probably would have gone right for the surgery instead of rehab.

Thanks for the tip man, I am going to see the doctor on Wednesday and he will prob bring up all my options. I've heard spinal surgery is oftentimes a tricky endeavor, as many people can have worse pain following it.
