ATTN: Online poker players of OS

For those of you poker players who play online at all, I just thought I'd let you know that Poker Stars is having a special Sunday Million tournament today. The prize pool is usually $1,000,000 but in celebration of the tournament's 4th anniversary, they have added another $3,000,000 to the prize pool. That is a guaranteed $4,000,000 out there and the winner is guaranteed a smooth million of it alone! The buy in is still the usual $215 which is peanuts for what you have a shot to win. I'm definitely going to play this tournament and just wanted to see who else was. Even if you don't enter, feel free to look me up on there. My screen name on Poker Stars is MrLuckyFlops and I have a Tampa Bay Buccaneers flag as my avatar. Corny, I know. See you at the tables and good luck!

Tourney starts in 15 minutes and there are already over 25,000 players registered in it. The prize pool is now more than 5 million dollars!

I thought we had a bunch of online poker players here? I guess not...

Yeah that's a bad beat, but I wouldn't call it a bad-beat for the ages. It's not like he was completely dominated with something like A-Q where his only chance of winning was to make trips. On the flop, he did hit top pair with a good kicker and then had 5 outs to go. I've suffered far worse beats where the person needed runner-runner to beat me, or had just one out and caught it. (Such as me having the nut flush and my opponent needing to hit his gut-shot straight flush draw in order for him to win. Or, flopping top set, my opponent flops middle set, then catches quads on the river).

Can't really say I see anything wrong with either play in that hand.

I know, but when was the last time you were knocked out of a tournament where first place was more than $1.1 million dollars? See why it's such a bad beat now?

I always find cold decks to be more bothersome to me than bad beats. At least with a bad beat you can always say "At least I played this properly". With a cold deck, you are pretty much screwed no matter what you do. Such as when you flop trips, but someone else flops better trips. Or you flop a straight flush, and someone else flops a higher straight flush. (That was my most painful beat ever. Had the 8-9 spades in the big blind. Three or four people called (can't remember exactly), and so I just checked. Nothing bad about seeing a free flop basically. Flop comes down 10-J-Q of spades. SWEET! Flopped a straight flush! I check it, one person bets, it gets raised, then I just call as I wanted to keep as many people in as possible. The turn was something insignificant, so I bet out, got raised, then I re-raised all in. The other guy calls and flips over A-K of spades. The mother-****er had slowplayed AK pre-flop and of course I just happened to have 8-9 of spades. This was back in the day where real money was used online, so I kissed $300 goodbye thanks to that cold deck. Pissed me off to no end).

There is absolutely nothing you can do about cold decks, and in many cases I almost think that they are done on purpose. (One thing I've noticed playing on Poker Starts (username = Jdurg) is that when you are in a tournament the software seems to pick different players to give all the good cards and all the successful draws to. You just need to notice when the software is giving you the winning hands and take advantage of it. Then start folding when you've noticed that the winning hands have moved on to someone else. It's really strange and I didn't think this was happening, but once I really took notice of it and adjusted my game plan accordingly I've won just about every tourney I've played in. This might sound really weird, but in many cases I've had an overpair to the flop but noticed that with runner-runner someone could suck out on me. When I've seen a player involved in the hand who has been catching miracles over the previous few hands, I will typically fold to any bet that is made and 99% of the time I end up being right as he catches the miracle two outer on the turn or river.

Dude, it's random, just like real life. Sometimes IRL you get long streaks where you never get a good hand, just how it goes. I don't think the machines are out to get you...

Is it all tournaments or can you buy into a X amount of $ table and play like it's a game in your garage?

You can play tournaments and cash games any time you want as long as you have enough money in your account to cover what you want to play.

I play at Full Tilt and they have low buy ins. I'm sure Poker Stars would have them as well.

They have tons of lower limit games, but you'll never see me play in a cash game with less than a $100 buy in. Too many donks in the lower levels.
