Arguing/debating here on OS.. Why do we do it?

Yeah I use Facebook just for old high school and college friends. Got some old military buddies on there too and some of my old neighbors when I use to live in different cities. But that is about it....more of a hey how you and the family doing kind of thing.

Far as WOW......one of my coworkers told me yesterday he spend 12 hours a day on that thing. I was like no wonder you drink so much coffee at work, you don't sleep. Heck he even dates people he meets on WOW.

mjb2124 - i'm not talking about folks like yourself, i have many friends on facebook just like that, i'm talking about folks who actively engage in debates due to their strong feelings on politics, social issues, causes, etc, even start them with others, but then when they seemingly can't handle the heat because others bring up points they don't like then they simply choose to de-friend.

For example, one guy who I knew from high school is hugely into politics, he spends almost all of his time posting articles, and links to me (i'm his polar opposite politically) and we would debate frequently. One day I go to message him and find i'm no longer on his friends list, so I emailed him and he said "yeah I got too mad so I de-friended you, sorry" and then he added me back to his list.

That's what I'm talking about, people who seemingly enjoy debating but then get their feelings hurt if they feel you're besting them or being unfair or whatever so they run and de-friend you. It's somewhat childish IMO.

I had some Facebook friends like that too, HS was 13 years ago, I would have thought some of us had grown up by now.

Yeah, I mean if your feelings are hurt by debating on Facebook then why do you keep trying to indulge in it at every opportunity?

Because those who I found do it need to ego boost of people agreeing with them. Some people just can't handle it when others have an opposing view point on anything and need to surround themselves with those who think the same to pat them on the back so they feel better. Myself I am used to people disagreeing with my point of view, but I never take offense to it unless my intelligence is questioned as a response or insults are handed out, that's why I like arguing with Cebby so much actually. Similarly I will rarely resort to insult calling myself, I just like discussion and feed off of disagreement.

Just about every. single. time. I see a stupid comment it's by someone that has joined in the last 2 years.

I'd hate to group all the new guys... but their peers aren't exactly the cream of the crop.

Not all old OSers have great comments all of the time.

For instance, me. I've got a 1:5 helpful-to-stupid/nonsense comment ratio going.

Yes I greatly enjoy it too, so long as it doesn't get personal. I really don't like personal attacks and make it a point to never try to personally attack anyone. I agree that some folks simply want everyone to agree with them. They are willing to try to convince others but if they get back some rational arguments from them instead of it engaging them it infuriates them.

The ironic thing is that if these folks simply abstained from "poking the bear" then they'd not have to endure such atrocities (as they see them). Some folks have learned as such and simply don't engage me anymore, I mean in a debate type fashion, and i'm cool with that. But others keep trying and I can tell it just makes them aggravated.

But then for some folks, they aren't happy unless they're aggravated, as the saying goes..LOL!

I would think this would go without saying. But I meant it more in terms of those interested in discussing the games, not the ones that decide to live in the pro sports and other forums.

When I joined OS it seemed that a lot more of the debate of those sports made it into the video game side of the forums as well. Now I actually see them as places to avoid. It used to be great to go to for information, now even that's a chore.

But that's what sucks about it now, Mass. You avoid the game forums on a sports game website. You shouldn't have to, though I understand why.

I still want the best for sports gaming, and most of what is being demanded by new guys isn't it. It's what THEY want, not what will help sports games in general. I'll wade through the crud if I have to since it means a better game for me to spend my money on.

Sports games are what brought me here and sports games are what keep me here.
