    What's with all the earthquakes?

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe...ex.html?hpt=T1

Have three earthquakes like this ever happened in such close succession?
"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."

Re: What's with all the earthquakes?

It's hard to say whether Man has caused these issues seeing as these are forces of nature that occur hundreds and thousands of miles below the surface where we have not been able to get to. I think it's merely just coincidence or a build up affect of one massive earthquake causing issues in other faults.

Do I believe it's the end of days? No. Do I care? No. If it were the end of our world there is honestly nothing a man like me could do to prevent it. This isn't Hollywood so if it's the end, it's the end; there is no anti-doomsday device or group of scientists or government entity that can prevent it.

Tectonic plates are shifting just like they've been for the past several billion years.

Much like shark attacks, you're only hearing about them because of Haiti. Once one "big" shark attack is recorded, over the next few weeks any aggressive shark in the entire world is headline news.

While certainly a big deal for Chile, a sub-300 fatality natural disaster in the third world isn't making any major news headlines in the US if not for Haiti nor is "several dozen" in Turkey. Generally when natural disasters occur in the developing world and are covered by US news outlets, the death tolls are in the tens to hundreds of thousands.

There are literally dozens, if not hundreds of recordable earthquakes every day. It just takes a well placed one in a poor area lacking anything resembling basic infrastructure (Haiti) to kill a lot of people.

for me not only the occurances , but the size of them i find more interesting. not only that why is that the earthquake in chile caused or the impression that a tsumani would happen in Hawaii, but nothing was ever noted for Hati which is surrounded by water , nor anything happen to domenican republic

Tsunami's are only caused by certain kinds of earthquakes. Earthquakes around the Caribbean/Atlantic Ocean almost never cause them.

Yeah, lot's of factors go into it. Whether the epicenter was under land or sea, the depth of the quake, the type of plate movement, etc.

And like Cebby said, there are many earthquakes every day though most either are not felt or are of no significance. You can sort of think of the Earth like pack ice floating on top of a large body of water. The pack ice isn't all one solid sheet but numerous large chunks of ice that are constantly moving against each other. Whereas the Earth's crust is made up of numerous solid plates that are riding on top of the molten or semi-molten mantle.

Thousands of earthquakes happen every day. Some are big.

That's because the Dominican Republic is a legitimate country while Haiti has the worst government and infrastructure of any country that isn't currently in a war (Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, etc).

A simple flu would probably be capable of decimating Haiti.
