N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

CANDLER, N.C. (KABC) -- A N.C. teacher is in hot water after writing 'loser' on a 6th grade student's assignments. He said it was his way of joking.

The girl's mother, Patty Clement, said the Enka Middle School teacher Rex Roland has done this twice now on her daughter's assignments and says it sends the wrong message.

"This is telling her 'You're a loser. You're not going to go anywhere,'" she said.

The girl was removed from Roland's class. Roland apologized, saying this was his way of joking with the students.

Some parents defended his teaching style, but Clement wants him suspended.

The school district will only say that this is a personnel matter that's being looked into.

So nothing has happened? This piece of news came out almost 3 weeks ago, you'd think they'd have resolved it by now.

That's the key statement right there.

Clearly the dude has his own way of teaching and getting through to the kids and some parents really respect it. However, this one parent doesn't.

Sometimes you have to have an unorthodox teaching style to get kids to listen and learn. If that means joking that they are 'losers,' I have no problem with that. This seems to me like the typical overreaction from an overprotective parent.

What does it tell you if other parents are defending his teaching style? They wouldn't be defending his teaching style if it wasn't working.

I'd have to see more information about the guy, but that's what it looks like to me after reading this article.

The teacher was suspended two weeks without pay, for those wondering.

For this one student that was insulted by this, there seem to be plenty of stories of kids who love this teacher and actually understand that comments like these (from what it seems like with this teacher) are made in jest and an actual joke.

The key statement is mere journalistic rhetoric. It just said some supported his style, which for all we know is one or two parents whereas 10-15 are on the other side with this woman.

Then the journalist would have said more than just "Clement wants him suspended."

Not if he had already sided with one side and was looking to manipulate the facts to mesh with his view. When one resorts to the anonymous "some" as a means of discrediting the opposing view, it is just bad journalism.

I checked out the most popular Facebook groups against and in support of Mr. Rex Roland.

The people against him seem to be using the argument that a teacher should always have a positive influence on his students and that he was simply being abusive to someone less powerful.

The people for him, a lot of whom say they personally know Mr. Roland--some taught with him, some were taught by him, etc.--say he was known as a joker and that he is widely renowned as one of the best teachers in the school.

As for the topic at hand of this idiot teacher, if you are going to do this as a motivational technique (that sounds like Union spin) then you had better know you won't offend the student you are attempting to motivate. Teachers are important people in a child's life and for one to call you a loser could be horribly traumatic. It is a fine line and one if you choose to walk you need to know there will be consequences.

This just reminds me of stuff I had to put up with from Teachers and Professors... and Bosses, and jerks who thought they were Bosses, lol. Boy oh boy, I could tell you stories...

It just shows that some people never learn that being in a leadership role means that your actions are viewed differently and held to a higher standard. I also think--and have seen or been the target of plenty of examples--that a lot of these Teachers and so-called leaders are not psychologically fit to be in their roles in the first place.

One thing is for certain though, if you're going to do something like this, at least have enough sense not to write it down. It's like just handing over a smoking gun
