    Mattress Suggestion Thread

Well, this is another big purchase for my wife and I seeing that we are going to be moving soon to another city possibly. We want to leave the crappy one we have behind but we want to make sure that we make the proper decision on which mattress to purchase. What are some of the mattresses that you guys would suggest? I can't find any site that gives the best comparison of mattresses. I'm seriously trying to pick some solid ones. We were thinking about the Sleep Number before my wife fell in love with her friend's Temperpedic. Any suggestions?

I love the idea of the Temperpedic, but from my experience and from those that I talk to, they basically absorb your body heat, which was a deal breaker for me. I get hot way too easy when I sleep and the last thing I need is my mattress making me even warmer.

I remember when I was younger and my dad told me that he spent like $1,500-$2,000K on a mattress and I told him he was ridiculous. And then he told me that you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping and it made sense. So when my wife and I bought our first mattress, we didn't chince out.

We bought a traditional/eastern king as it's a bit wider (If I recall, I believe that California/western kings are longer and narrower)...I may have that backwards, but we went with the wider version. I think it's a Sealy Poster-pedic pillow top (non-flip). We both like our beds softer, so we went with one with a pretty plush top on it. It still has a bit of firmness, though.

It made all the difference in the world. I used to have probably 1-2 nights a week where I just couldn't get comfortable and would toss and turn for an hour before just going to the couch. Now those nights are few and far between and I've never slept better. I think we're going on about two years with this mattress. It was about $1800 or so, but it was a great investment for us. We both comment every now and then how much we love our bed.

If you go with a traditional or pillow top (basically non-tempurpdeic/sleep number) try out a Sam's Club or Costco. You'll find the same mattress you pay $1400 or $1500 at mattress dealer or furniture store for well under $1,000. The mark up on mattresses is just disgusting.
