    Men's style guide thread

ok guys I need some advice. I have a wedding this weekend and I'm the MC so i wanna look sharp. I already have a nice grey suit that looks a bit like this:

I was wondering what shirt/tie combo you guys would work well with this? Should i wear cufflinks (i've got some decent gold ones)? Should i have a folded handkerchief in the pocket?

    Thanks fella's

Feel free to also post any style / fashion related questions to see if the people here can help you out.

I say yes on the pocket square and since it's a wedding, a white-shirt/black-tie combo will ALWAYS work well. Don't get those big ties though, get one that's 3-inches at its widest point (the bottom). If you're feeling more fashionable, rock a skinny tie.

Hey man thanks for the advice. I think you might be right to go for the classic look. So basically i was thinking grey suit, white shirt, black tie, white pocket square, black shoes, cuff links.

Kinda like this with a white pocket square:

What do you guys think of gold watches on guys? I own a nice seiko gold watch that was a gift but it seems a bit "showy" so i don't wear it often.

Personally, I'd go with brown shoes. Black is safe. Brown screams for attention. Can't go wrong with either one though.

As for the watch, I'd go with something silver/dark or watches with leather straps.

The great thing with a grey suit you can wear brown, black, and maroon shoes. Remember you leather should match meaning your belt and your shoes.

Skinny ties are in but I rather classic looks because 5-10 years from now you don't look outdated when see the wedding picks. French cuffs with cuff links is a nice move but remember to match your metals relative to your watch. The reason why I would go with the cufflinks, a silk pocket square because during the reception you can take your tie off and party and still look fresh.

I know you want to wear a black tie but it is spring and you can add nice color to a grey suit with a nice tie/pocket square.

hey guys thanks again for the advice. I was talking to my sister in law and she suggested a white shirt with red/burgundy tie. My suit has flashes of red (the button stitching is red) and the bridal party is black dresses with red highlights so she thought the red would go nicely considering i'm the MC.

You guys think if i go with the red tie i should go with a matching red handkerchief for the pocket? I think that would look pretty cool. I've got a nice stainless watch that i think i'll wear with silver cufflinks, matches nicely and a bit more understated.

I like silk pocket squares. Check out this youtube vid on how to fold them.

You don't have to go with matching tie/handkerchief because you can use you handkerchief to bring out colors in both your tie and suit. In all honesty I never wear matching tie/handkerchief.

What color is your suit? If its plain, you might want to get a real good tie that pops.

I got a Burberry Tie a few years ago and I always get compliments for it.

Tie and Shoes and Socks really make a regular suit great.

Skinny Ties work well depending on your body type.

Also feel free to stuff a cucumber down your pants, It worked for Bob Barker.

                        This.

Gray suits are very versatile. You can get very creative and if you're going to be the MC I'd the pocket square & tie could make you stand out.

                          Re: Men's style guide thread

I never spend tons of money for my ties. I rather spend the money on the suit and shoes. How you tie your tie matter. There are major type of collars spread, button down, straight, and tab.

If your dress shirt is a spread/or windsor collar then go for a bigger knot. Here is the instructions on youtube.

                          <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M8BxLxf8KD0&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M8BxLxf8KD0&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

If you have a straight or tab then try a half windsor or four in hand.

                          <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hR4wfHw7Meo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hR4wfHw7Meo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Another look you can have for your suit is tucking in the pocket tabs. Tucking the tab in gives the suit a cleaner look IMO.

If you have a regular point/straight collar shirt you should go with a double four in hand knot or a St. Andrews knot. Also dont hesitate to check out http://www.styleforum.net and browse through the men's clothes section.

I'm always afraid of stuffing up when having too different a color tie and pocket square combo which is why i usually stick with matching colors.
