Graduating College and Looking for a Job

So i'm about to Graduate college with my Bachelors in Accounting in 27 days and already have started pumping out my resume'. So far the only places that have contacted me are insurance companies.

The one that got to my first was Bankers Life Insurance. They tend to gear their market towards elderly people. They invited in for a seminar, a second interview and finally a third interview where they gave me the job. Without thinking straight i excepted it there on the spot. I was suppose to go back on Thursday to fill out the paper work but never showed up. The pay is commission, and after doing my homework on insurance companies and Bankers, its just not what i'm looking for out of college. I feel bad for not returning, i want to be professional about it and call them or send them a letter thanking them for the time but declining their offer.

However i'm still in need of a job. Right now i work as a Sales representative at Target. I actually also put in a resume' there to become an executive. As a exec, the pay is salary and you usually start at 45-50 grand with benefits an vacation time; and because i've been there for two years now, they know me and life me there. I'm hoping they give me a job there as an exec for the time being. This way i can go for my CPA will having a feasible job and pay.

So who here is about to graduate soon?

I will receive my B.A. in Political Science in two weeks. Then I am planning on coming back for an additional semester in the Fall to get a B.A. in English.

Then I start playing Mega Millions.

Ha, no need to feel bad. Every other person that sat there in those rooms with you got the same job offer. Because it is commission only it really doesn't matter to them if you show up or not plus (unless you already have it) you would still have to pass the test to get your license until you could even start doing anything.

      Same thing happened to me!

Good luck to ya.........for an exec job at Target or any store for that matter, I think you going to need way more then 2 years of work experience.

I don't know of any store that will let you go from a sales rep to exec like that. You have to go in order ya know. Sales rep, department manager, assisstant manager, co-manager, etc.

Having a bachelor's degree don't mean jack crap to stores. They could careless. Commission jobs can be good if you got a good market to work in. But if I was you I would try a bank or hospital.

I have a MBA in Finance - above a 3.0 GPA and tons of contacts in the financial industry.

Right now things are an absolute mess.

Get your CPA - Apply to the big accounting firms - Go on linked in and talk to the HR recruiters there.

The only way you are gonna get to the head of the line is by personally knowing the hiring agents.

You should be in a better position then me, accounting is more of an in demand degree.

Re: Graduating College and Looking for a Job

I got another call from a different company, once again an Insurance company. I posted my resume' on Monster.com and it seems to only be Insurance companies calling me back. I don't want to see INSURANCE, or better yet, i don't want a job with COMMISSION

              I want an office job.

And Gotmadskillzson, about Target, thats actually how they get all their Executive leaders. My former Manager was hired straight out of College and so are two more of my managers. They hire for Executive positions straight out of college. I want a job there since i already have my foot in the door and i understand how their system works.

                Are you in St. Louis?

Is Scottrade corporate offices there? That would be a good place - back office accounting work.

Look for state and federal government jobs. I got a job an accounting job at a state university, and started out with 6 weeks off per year, paid health insurance, and a pension plan. No place else I have looked even come close to the benefits this job has.

LOL yeah Monster and Careerbuilder are LOADED with Insurance jobs. 90% of all hits on those websites come from Insurance jobs. I swear they are like vultures.

IF you want to continue working with Target more power to you. However IMO you can make way more money else where outside of the retail market. I would put my resume on one of those industry specific type of websites.

Monster and Careerbuilder is a mess if you live in a highly populated area and will take forever if ever to get noticed on there by the industry you trying to get noticed by,

i'm assuming you mean Stratford lol

um, I live in Milford and have been working some temp job at corporate towers in Shelton (while I finish up my BA), you could check businesses there

if you dont mind taking the train you should check out the Norwalk/Stamford area, there are good paying jobs down there even in this economy. My buddy is an accounting major and did an internship in Stamford in Jan/Feb (for good pay and course credits) and got a job offer for when he graduates

the train ride really isnt that bad and you'd be working in the financial/business section of one of the riches areas in the country... if you can stomach the travel, the pay will be solid

I'm coming up on the year anniversary of graduating college and I still have yet to get any work experience. Lot of interviews, fair amount of phone screeens and 2nd interviews and recruiters, no job offers (outside of, yup, commission based life insurance). I don't know, I know its only a bachelors, but I thought a Business IT degree was in demand. I had a 3.4+ GPA and I call after I send out resumes but I haven't even been able to get a Best Buy or Micro Center gig. Since when was a bachelors not good enough to be a bank teller? I really wanted to get into a entry level career and figured with Northern Virginia booming with businesses and DC a metro ride away, i'd have found something after mulling over a couple offers. Maybe its me.
