Re: Graduating College and Looking for a Job

Got the job offer today from the place where I interviewed yesterday. All pending on whether or not I can pass a drug test...which will not be a problem. Now I can get ready for an exciting life as a collector for a mortgage company. Whatever though, it's a foot in the door with an established company and it will definitely help out my experience, which is mainly in the food service industry. Today has been a good day.

HD TV and engagement ring will soon follow.

Majority will end up in a completely different field than their degree anyway.

Yep. I figure all my experience helping manage an ice cream shop (including opening up a new one and coming up with the name of it) will help me get into business school. I'll take it from there, I guess.

Well this is great to hear considering I plan on attending Law School in 2011 lol. Maybe the market will be different around the time I graduate. One can hope.

They are fine with degrees without certifications, you were probably just looking at the wrong types of companies/jobs. I have a Management Information Systems degree and didn't have problems getting interviews. My degree though focuses more on the business side. If you want to work in a hardware/network role, you need a different degree that will get you certifications. If you want to work more the on the business side, it doesn't help that you don't have the management experience.

And a majority of people are miserable and broke. I don't like this argument when mapping out ones life.

If you worked your entire life to get into a particular field, you shouldn't give up after a 8-12 of unemployment and go into a different direction.

Re: Graduating College and Looking for a Job

I'm graduating in a couple of weeks here with a bachelor's degree in food science. I got hired on my first (ever) job interview for a supervisor position working in food production. My previous jobs were all sales based and mostly 100% commission (including door to door sales). I think that real life communication experience made it a pretty easy decision for the company. This position is salary with full benefits. I need it.. my school loans are horrendous.

The other interviewees had no chance with their backgrounds compared to what I had. It's truly a blessing that everything is lining up like this. Doing all those hard jobs on purpose in the past and now seeing them culminate into a better future is extremely gratifying.

I'm considering graduate school in a few years possibly in a business field. It'd be fun to work at the corporate level. Does anyone have any input on MBA's in business?

Also, to the other guys still looking: yeah interviews are basically a big sales pitch. Because my background was sales I had no problem dominating 2 1/2 hours of straight interviewing after a 1/2 hour phone interview. What was interesting is that all the struggles I had with my positions in the past ended up applying to all their interview questions really well. Whenever they asked what I wanted in the future, I always said more responsibility.

Come to Australia. Accountants are in great demand and earn good money. My wife is an accountant and the number of job offers she gets etc is pretty amazing. She just turned 30 and makes 70K + benefits with plenty of opportunities for advancement down the road. She is pretty clever though.
