US youngsters are too fat to fight, warn generals

Former generals want Congress to act to give children better food in schools

Rising rates of obesity among young Americans could undermine the future of the US military, two retired generals have warned.

More than a quarter of young Americans are now too fat to fight, they said.

Writing in the Washington Post, the ex-commanders said the fat crisis ruled out more potential military service recruits than any other medical factor.

They want Congress to introduce laws to give US children better nutrition in schools, with less sugar, salt and fat.

John Shalikashvili and Hugh Shelton, both former chairmen of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote: "Obesity rates threaten the overall health of America and the future strength of our military."

"We consider this problem so serious from a national security perspective that we have joined more than 130 other retired generals, admirals and senior military leaders in calling on Congress to pass new child nutrition legislation," the commanders added.

The warning comes amid mounting fears that childhood obesity has turned into an "epidemic" affecting an astonishing one in three young American people.

Mr Shalikashvili and Mr Shelton pointed to post-school lunch laws from 1946, which recognised that poor nutrition reduced the pool of military recruits.

"We must act, as we did after World War II, to ensure that our children can one day defend our country, if need be."

Perhaps the idea of military run schools wouldn't be so bad.

          Make it voluntary though.

Not a big deal at all.

This isn't the 1950s where a potential war would be mostly won with manpower.

If there was a legitimate state threat to the United States it would be won by dropping bombs and half of those would be controlled by someone hundreds, if not thousands of miles away.

Yeah manpower isn't in modern warfare anyway. It is all technology based now. Ground wars are starting to become oboslete for the USA.

Besides what did they expect when they stopped recess in most inner city schools back in the 1980s.

If everything was equal, I would understand.

However, the way the height / weight is handled in the military is a crock. During my 6 year stint I saw some amazing issues regarding this. Was a squad leader over an overweight soldier and had to give him monthly counseling, make him attend extra PT in the evenings and force him into the " fat boy " line in the chow hall.

There was not a vehicle in the motorpool we had that he couldnt fix. Hummers, Dueces, 5 tons, HEMTTs, Bradleys, Sheridans etc....you name it, he could fix it. Command made me start the chapter paperwork on him because of height / weight standards prior to our deployment to Iraq.

Our unit relied heavily on him back in the rear, but command didnt him to be a " liability" while we were deployed and thus he stayed back pending his chapter while we deployed.

Fast forward to our wonderful vacation in the desert and all of a sudden we had a huge influx of aircraft / vehicle issues due to overuse, sand, etc...

At one point we had over 8 vehicles all deadlined and unable to use because our " fat azz " soldier was no longer with us. My squad was comprised of soldiers that could all run fast as hell, but that sure didnt help us get combat ready.

In closing...fug the height / weight standards in the military. If you can perform, you can perfom.

I don't think it necessarily just needs to be for the military, but we do need to do something about obesity

There should be more opportunity for kids to exercise. I think nutrition is only part of the issue. Physical education isn't a priority like it used to be.

Alright, I've sent a few emails to Generals including to General Mills and Captain Crunch for good measure warning them that US youngsters are too fat to fight, just like the thread title says.
