All Game Crazies, Hollywood Videos and Movie Galleries are closing very soon

In February, bankrupt video renter and retailer Movie Gallery announced it was closing all but 250 Game Crazy locations. The game-rental chain was a subsidiary of Hollywood Video, and its outlets were paired with the movie-rental franchise, which Movie Gallery bought in 2005. Some 545 Hollywood Video locations were also to survive.

Game Crazy is perishing along with parent Movie Gallery.


Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that Movie Gallery, facing its second bankruptcy filing in roughly two years, has decided to shut down entirely. The move will see all 2,415 US Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video, and Game Crazy locations close in the coming months, with about 19,000 people losing their jobs. The fate of the company's 184 Canadian locations is unclear, reports the Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter."
Movie Gallery's closure was blamed on both its $600 million in debt, much of which was incurred by the Hollywood Video purchase, and increased competition from automated Redbox video-rental kiosks. Another major contributor was the rise of Netflix, which rents DVDs via mail, as well as via online streaming to PC, Macs, Xbox 360s, PlayStation 3s, and Wiis.

So ummm I really hope nobody pre-ordered any games with them. I just drove by the one by my house, that location shut down over night. It was opened yesterday. But now they took everything out of there.

I think it's just a question of when. Wouldn't surprise me if they shift to just the online rentals like Netflix.

The combo of Netflix and kiosk rentals (Redbox, mydvdxpress, etc) has killed the brick and mortar rental places. You'd have be dumb to pay $5-6 when you can get a overnight rental for $1.

We've got a Blockbuster a few minutes from here. But they also have the Blockbuster Express $1 rental boxes scattered around trying to compete with Redbox.

I just wish they offered the blurays for $1.

I was offered a manager position at a Family Video two years ago and turned it down because I don't feel like becoming unemployed next year.

In high school, I used to rent games and movies all the time from Hollywood Video and Blockbuster. Now I just buy em, but I occasionally rent games to see how they are. Gamefly is better for games than either store, and GameCrazy is outmatched by Gamestop. Not surprised at all.

I want to take my two Movie Gallery cards out of my wallet but I'm afraid that when I do, all my other cards in that little slot will fall out because it's too stretched out. I've got a real dilemma on my hands. Life is hard.
