Illinois Woman Suing Judge Who Jailed Her For Inappropriate Clothin in Court

Here is the shirt.....



The barred out word is ***** of course, a word that can either be very innocent or in the proper context probably cross the indecent line. To me I can't understand how anyone could find this appropriate to where to a court house and inside a court room (she was only in the gallery). For those who will question her First Amendment rights being violated, not so much in this case as the shirt is very likely obscene, coupled with the rules that apply as to proper decorum in a court room. I am honestly surprised she even got by the guard at the entrance wearing that shirt.

I agree she shouldn't have worn that to court. But I don't think she should have been locked up. She should have just been asked to change the shirt. That's usually what happens where I live when you wear something inapproriate.

For some reason though,I don't think we're getting the whole story.

Yeah my gut says she mouthed off to the Judge before leaving the Court room. That said, wearing that shirt into a court room is instantly contempt of Court. I've only been threatened with it once because the Judge was a bitch who refused to apply the law as interpreted by our Appeals Court.

Yeah my gut says she mouthed off to the Judge before leaving the Court room. That said, wearing that shirt into a court room is instantly contempt of Court. I've only been threatened with it once because the Judge was a bitch who refused to apply the law as interpreted by our Appeals Court.

I understand she says she was just coming from the gym,but you know you're not dressed for court why not just wait out in the lobby? Or better yet just have your friend call you to pick them up afterwards.

Ugh, yet another Illinois citizen acting the fool.

To me I can't understand how anyone could find this appropriate to where to a court house and inside a court room (she was only in the gallery).

Again, in Illinois this is the norm, at least in the collar counties where I have had the experience of going to court a few times. I've seen people wearing ripped jeans, baseball hats on sideways, pants that are halfway down one's buttcrack, clothes that appear to have not been washed since the Reagan administration, and all other kinds of inappropriate attire. Of course I always rock a suit whenever I enter a courthouse and I'm the one who gets looked at sideways... society I guess?

IMO, it's not that difficult to look presentable while you're trying wriggle your way out of a ticket or god forbid something worse.

Personally,I think that if you aren't there on court business,you shouldn't be in the courtroom. I swear here where I live,the majority of the people in the courtroom aren't there on court business,they're there to be nosy.

Completely serious. The only time I saw someone get kicked out of court was because thier cell phone rang. Granted, it's a small sample size in my experiences with a courtroom, but it doesn't make it any less rediculous. It's all about having respect for the situation you have put yourself in.

I agree that if you don't have business at the court, you shouldn't be in the courtroom, just wait in the hallway. That's what I have done when I've accompanied friends/family members to court.

She shouldn't of wore that shirt but if what I'm reading in the story is correct then something is wrong. She wasn't given the opportunity to make a phone call, and never went to bond court? I'm not an expert in the justice system but isn't there something wrong with that?

And we do not have the full story, I do have a feeling she mouthed off to the judge about it and her excuse is lame. No one cares if you didn't have time to change, if your dressed like a slob then don't go in the courtroom.
