    Teacher abuses child in classroom

    Video of the incident

    Link to story

It's a question a mother doesn't expect to get from her 13-year-old son after school: What happens to a teacher who beats up a student?
But Isaiah Reagins, a sixth-grader at Jamie's House Charter School in north Harris County, had good reason to ask. According to his mom and a cell phone video that apparently captured the incident, a female science teacher dragged him by the legs across the floor, slapped his face repeatedly, kicked his back at least twice and slammed his head against a wall.
“He said, ‘Mama, a teacher jumped on me,' ” the boy's mom, Alesha Johnson, recalled in a phone interview Tuesday. “He said, ‘I have a knot on my head.' ”
Johnson said her son also had a faint black eye and bruises on his sides.
School officials said Tuesday that they fired 40-year-old Sheri Lynn Davis. She had worked at the school, which serves about 100 at-risk students, for three years and never had any complaints against her, according to a Jamie's House spokeswoman.
“The kids loved her,” said spokeswoman Sue Davis, who is not related to the teacher.
The teacher could not be reached for comment.
School officials said they first saw the video Monday evening when it aired on a Fox-Channel 26 news show.
Johnson said the beating of her son took place April 29. She reported it to the school a few days later, though she did not bring the video with her.
Spokeswoman Davis said the teacher apologized and was put on administrative duty. After seeing the video on TV several days later, principal David Jones moved to fire the teacher.
“There is no excuse for a teacher to behave in this way with a child,” Jones said in a written statement.
Johnson said that, before the incident, her son and several other students were in a classroom dancing to music after taking a high-stakes Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam.
“There was this little girl, she was shaking her butt and dancing around with all the other kids,” Johnson said. “My son was laughing. Everybody was laughing. They were having fun.
“The little girl got mad and said, ‘Stop laughing at me before I punch you in the face.' My son was like, ‘Come on, come on.' He never jumped the little girl.”
According to the video, Isaiah was standing against a wall behind a desk when the teacher approached him. She threw the desk to her left, kicked a book on the floor and lunged into a punching position. Isaiah then crouched in a corner, and the teacher grabbed him by the legs.
School officials said the boy did not have any visible bruises or a black eye.
The Crimes Against Children unit of the Harris County Sheriff's Office has taken an initial report and plans to launch an investigation, according to spokeswoman Christina Garza.

Saw the story last night. Completely ridiculous. Hope the teacher goes to jail for a while.

            Totally agree.

I'm not a teacher, nor will I ever be. But some of you need to try and teach "struggling" kids and let me know your breaking point.

I've heard horror stories from some of my friends and their wives who teach. My wife's cousin teaches at a respectable school and he had a kid spit in his face because the kid didn't want to do his homework. If that was me, that kid would've gotten destroyed.

Not saying what she did was right, but she probably had enough.

I don't teach them, but I provide in-home counseling to the kids with the most severe emotional and behavioral disorders in Kentucky. I've also worked as a psych attendant (tech or orderly) in a state psychiatric hospital. Kids don't deserve that. Especially from a teacher. I believe in tough love and discipline as much as anybody, but a beating is not discipline. I believe in spanking and physical consequences, but this kind of thing is out of control and over the line.

EDIT: I've been doing the above work for over 5 years. I've been bitten, punched, spit on, cussed out, pushed, and other things. You know how I've reacted? With patience. I outlast the kid I'm working with and am one of the most respected therapists in my region, among families and other professionals for it. If I can't help the kids I work with turn it around, they end up in jail or in the hospital. I don't accept either one.

This post makes me more angry than any I've ever read on this site. How does he or any other kid deserve worse than cowering in a corner and being beaten? Would you rather he be stabbed or stood up with his hands to his sides so you could punch him in the face with no defense? How about the teacher tie him up and drag him behind her car? Or better yet, we could just light him on fire for a while. Would that be enough?

He was in an at risk school, so he isn't a saint. The video doesn't show what happened to cause it. Maybe there is some past history.

The teacher shouldn't have done that though. She had crossed the line when dragging him on the ground, but it wasn't that bad. Then she started punching him. She should have just grabbed his ear and took him to the office.

It sounded like from the video that he probably said some things he shouldn't have to a female in the class as she was saying you want to fight a girl.

The comments on the video say the kid in the video had just beat up a handicapped girl before that whole incident happened.

For those who missed this post and think the teacher was straight out of line for boxing him up. THE KID IN THE VIDEO HAD JUST BEAT UP A HANDICAPPED GIRL BEFORE THE TEACHER GOT TO HIM!!

I won't say this is right or wrong, but I believe that the kid crossed the line of being handled like a normal human being when he attacked a female who clearly couldn't have defended herself. It makes me give more respect to the teacher who felt the sickness in her gut enough to take matters into her own hands.

Slimm44, do you have children? Just curious??

Doesn't matter if the kid attacked a mentally challenged girl or not. Teacher was way out of line. I bet if this kid was one of those big 13 year olds, like 5'11" 150 she wouldn't have done that. Her act was 10 times worse than the boys.

Definitely agree with that. I do have to say that I've seen a lot. My mother was a teacher and my wife is a teacher. If you guys could really hear the stories. I really wish there was a type of reproduction police that could really calculate whether a person would be a fit parent or not. There are some straight lost causes boiling in these high schools in Chicago, let alone the U.S. I think the ruler needs to make its way back into schools as well as sensible discipline. This way, we don't get these types of outburst as well as others we hear about.

                              Yes I do.

I agree that the punishment should be severe, especially if he was aggressive toward a handicapped girl. I cannot agree that the way that teacher handled it was anything short of abusive. That was exactly what you are NOT supposed to do, under any circumstance. Hold him down, take him to the office, yell for help if you can't take care of it on your own, but kicking and hitting him isn't gonna do anything except get you fired, lose your professional career, and probably get you into the legal system.

What she did taught the kid NOTHING good. If the kid's in a special ed placement, which is possible, it's not his first run-in with authority or his first behavioral problem. If what they're trying isn't working, which it's pretty obvious here it's not, then maybe he needs to be in a different school that is more equipped to handle that type of behavior, sent to partial hospitalization where he goes to school and is institutionalized during the day, or sent to juvenile detention, given a court designated worker, and given a case-plan to work. Regardless, it's obvious that school is not able to give him the structure he needs. Where was the teacher when this kid was hitting the girl?

I may have missed them if they're in here, but has anybody offered any constructive ideas that you would try if in her shoes? Or is it OK to beat a kid 30's-style-boxing if they "cross the line"?
