Anyone here ever changed your last name?

My mom is wanting to change her last name back to her maiden name. I've also been considering changing my last name too as I am estranged from my father and no longer wish to be associated with his name. So I was wondering if any OS'ers had any insight into how much it costs and anything else we may need to know about changing our names.

Anyone here ever changed your last name before?

It seems like way too much trouble to be worth it, especially at your age.

Well from what I've read it doesn't seem like a lot. Get it changed through a court, pay a fee (i've read from $100 to $300) and then just notify everyone of the change. Like when you move and you notify everyone of your address change.

If you are simply changing your last name to your mother's maiden name it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. I'd imagine you have to give public notice through a local newspaper as well, although that may be handled with the fees.

MassNole - I've not decided what i'm changing my last name to as of yet. But if my mom changes hers it will be to her maiden name. I have read though about that public notice stuff, that's pretty weird, LOL.

That's what I think the hassle would be. Contacting everyone you do business with seems like a lot of work for no real reason.

It's not like your dad is world renowned and everyone associates you with him.

That IS weird. It sounds like a holdover from the 18th century to me.

Well it would be to give creditors notice that you have a new identity, and anyone actually could challenge the name change, but unless you decide to become Lebron James or something it isn't a big deal unless they have actual cause to contest.

Re: Anyone here ever changed your last name?

Well I'm used to moving and notifying everyone of it so it'd be the same concept, filling out forms.

As for my dad, I've never even thought about what you posted Cebby, about how people associate me with him. I just personally do not like being reminded of him or his whole family everytime I fill out anything. It really boils down to I have never really considered myself a member of his family and would like my own identity. In fact, a lot of his family stands for a lot of things I don't like about people.

So I am not just considering this out of vindictiveness or anything toward him, but more to rid myself of a name i've never felt like was my own anyways. Jeesh when I word it that way it reminds me of a guy wanting sex change surgery or something, LOL

Hmm, wasn't there a story a couple years ago or so of some guy who looked a lot like Michael Jordan and he wanted to change his name to that?

My friend suggested Holiday. Shaun Holiday! Or I identify myself strongly with my Irish heritage and my grandparents name was Murphy so maybe Shaun Murphy. Couldn't be much more Irish than that. I always liked the name Shaun Alexander but then everyone would wonder if I was the former MVP running back for the Seattle Seahawks, haha.
