IDK...thats a great achievement and all....just part of me feels like these kids are such a part of the "babied" generation that they are given these opportunities and probably have tons of money to attempt things like this.

Where does it stop, next we're gonna have 9 year olds climbing mountains and ish because his parents coached, babied, and spoiled him for the first 8 years of his life to allow him to do it.

Is that a bad thing or something? What's wrong with kids growing up in a family with a lot of money and ones who allow them to accomplish such feats?

yea...nothing. I know what I said is kind of strange.

Just kind of tired of hearing every week about some 12 year old who did such and such feat to become the youngest person ever. Just think its another example of kids babying and spoiling their kids.

I know what I'm saying is weird...just irks me that some 13 year old told his parents he wanted to climb Mt Everest, or some 17 year old girl told her parents she wanted to sail around the world by herself...and the parents, instead of being normal, agreed to make it happen. Probably have the type of psycho stuck up competitive show off parents that I loathe.

Whatever happened to kids being kids? LOL. I'm gonna send my 6 year old son in a hot air balloon around the world just to shove it in everyone's faces

edit: LOL just read the end of the article where it talks about all these young kids doing these things. A court had to stop a 14 year old girl from trying to sail around the world by herself? Good lord.....these f'ing parents man...exactly what I'm talking about.....let your kids be kids for gods sake and have them do this stuff when they are ready....pyschos trying to have their kids break world records and crap

I dunno. I don't think it's that the parents aren't letting their kids be kids. I doubt the parents are telling them "yeah.. you can't go hang with your friends and play xbox or go outside and ride your bike.. you're gonna go scale Mt. Everest." The kids probably want to do those things and their parents just let them because, well, they have the money and why stop your kid from doing something he/she wants to accomplish?

Because they tend to be activities that could get the kid killed for no other reason than being the "youngest" to do something.

That said, without knowing the kids personally...I got no clue how to judge their motivation on why they want to do these things in the first place.

What if the kid died while doing this? This was a huge risk the parents took and thankfully it went ok.

I would never let my kid do this while he is living under my roof. I wouldn't let my kid do something this dangerous at the age of 13. If he absolutely wanted to do this, he can wait til he is 18.

Well, you can let your 13 y/o kid climb up on the roof. What could happen...?

This. Anytime where failure means death is not a good situation--regardless of the outcome.

You guys probably know more than me about parenting just simply due to age even if you don't have kids, so I won't argue further with it.

I know absolutely zero about parenting and hope to keep it that way for at least another 10 years. But I couldn't imagine myself letting my kid scale Mt. Everest. The risk outweighs the reward big time in my eyes.

I think I was looking at it through kids eyes more than the parents. I also don't know exactly how dangerous climbing Mt. Everest really is. You don't hear about deaths that often, at least I haven't. What are the statistics?

Not sure about the statistics but I read that 3 days after this kid climbed it a guy died up there because he went blind.

                        Edit: Here are some statistics.
This content resource is part of the Hillary Conquers Everest series. On this site students learn about the tallest mountain in the world and the history of attempts to scale it. The site includes links to other Mt. Everest sites as well as to a teacher's guide.

Not sure how accurate or old that website is. But 142 people have died out an estimated 4000 who have climbed it.

This talks about the dangers of Mt. Everest and other mountains.

16 year old girl attempting to sail around the world by herself....

                          feared lost at sea....

                          according to ESPN.

Hope she's ok....but, EXACTLY the reason I was ranting earlier. Psychotic parents who are doing this for the wrong reason

This serves as a perfect example. Someone started a thread about it too.
