I don't know why you would want to go to any foreign country without having plans for were you are staying each night.

As for backpacking, not for me. As for sleeping on peoples' couches you meet on the internet, no way. Someone who offers a couch to strangers in today's world is going to be a weirdo. You may not get killed, but those people are definitely different. I don't know how you could sleep.

Yes, they are different, they're European and far less paranoid and more open to meeting new people haha. I can see the skepticism, don't get me wrong, but if you look at the website and check references, these are just regular people who are interested in meeting new people and helping out fellow travelers.

Exactly, and as a Canadian I share the same mentality. You're putting money into my economy, so why wouldn't I go out of my way to help you out?

You bet. Man the best experiences I had there were with Couch Surfers, what's life without a bit of adventure? We stayed at someone's house in Vienna and she had another couch surfer from Finland that she was now friends with just from meeting on CS. You can show your gratitude by buying some beer, or in our case, we cooked meals for them.

I saved up about 5 grand, but it depends on how you're traveling. I'm going to use the flex Eurorail pass for when I go into eastern europe. I'm going to use EZ Jet to fly into major cities. Eurorail is not cheap at all! My advice would be to start saving now. I lucked out, the Euro is gone to the ****ter thanks to Greece. One Euro is about 1.26 cents CDN.

I think you're crazy to do this alone unless you already know people in the places you're going to. I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping in a strangers house/apartment, especially by myself.

One of my former co-workers went backpacking through Europe with a couple of his buddies and he had the time of his life.

I think I am heading to Germany for 2 weeks end of September/early October to check out Oktoberfest in Munich then head up to Berlin for a while.

Sounds like a great time. I wish I could do something like that... How did you get that much time off from work? My wife and I want to travel Europe, but the most either of us can get off from work at any one time is 1 week. That's not leaving much time for a trip like that.

I would also love to do this. How much are you expecting to spend?

My sister went to India - alone, and was there for 9 months. She's a little blond chick too.

Some people can just do it.

Yeah, and India is like 1000x more gully than most of Europe... there's all kinds of crazy **** happening there at any given time. I've heard nothing but good things about the majority of people there (like most quasi-developing nations), but with a population that large and often desperate, that's a bigger risk than a guy traveling through Europe by far.

                            Nivek will be fine.

Just arrived in Amsterdam - it only took one train ride into the city centre to fall in love with this place. I haven't even stepped foot in any smoke shops - just amazing atmosphere with uber friendly people.

                              So far, so good!
